It's good to have a couple of homebuilt parts catalogues on hand. Spruce & Specialty's catalogue can provide much of the hardware used, Hagazines such as “Homebuilt Aircraft" or "Sport Aviation" also provide sources for materials, Supplies should be shopped around for because prices vary widely. In general, the best prices are found at the larger dealers, wholesale distributors or manu- facturers. Try to buy the nuts, bolts, and rivets from a fastener Wholesaler, and the aluminun from a large metal dealer. Supplies can often be scrounged for or obtained through a friend at reduced cost. Wing and tail covering supplies can usually be picked up at a local airport through an FBO. Teman Aircraft will be able to supply wing ribs and other parts if desired. The local FAA office should be contacted prior to the covering of the wings and again before the first flight. They will issue an airworthiness certificate at this time, For this they may ask for @ weight and balance sheet and 3-view or photo (supplied) along with proof of registration. Registration may be obtained by filling out en info sheet (available from FAA) and sending this with $5 to PAA registration in Oklahoma City. You will then be sent en "I" number which must be affixed to the "Mono-Fly" in 3" numerals in a conspicuous place. The word “experigental” must also appear. Prior to taxi-testing ard first flight, the aircraft must be thor oughly checked out. All systens must function well. Although no one is more qualified than the builder, the craft should be looked at by another qualified individual. Certain critical items must be given special attention. @ Powerplant — The Onan engine (if used) is a reliable engine which should give hundreds of hours of smooth operation, but the fuel system and electrical system feeding the unit must be just es reliable, The engine should be run several hours on the ground to ensure proper fuel flow. The "Kono-Fly"" should be tilted to simulate various flight attitudes during run-up. Despite the edvanteges of a pusher prop, one disad— vantege is that any loose parts left near the engine mey fall into the spinning prop. 411 wiring must be checked for possible shorting and must be secured by plastic tie wraps to prevent vibration and loosening. The prop should be checked occasionally to be sure it has no deep nicks or cracks and is secured to hub. The prop hub should be fastened tightly to the engine shaft with no movement between the two. © Landing gear - before flight, the gear should be checked for load carrying capacity by having a couple heavy people stand on the frame near the main gear. , Observe the movezent of the Suspension while it is under load. ‘The nose gear steering should be edjusted to allow travel in a straight line when foot bar is centered. The rudder should also be straight. This adjustment should be done during first texi test. Cheok the nose gear for proper spring. ® Controls ~ Before flight, have someone hang onto the ailerons while the control yoke is being turned. Wake sure there is no slippage. Do the same for the rudder and stabilator. For the first flight, adjust the control pedestal to be in a vertical position when the stabilator is horizontal. This will give level flight at cruise setting of throttle. The throttle also should be cycled through its full range. ‘hen the throttle is set in a particular position, it should remain there without éreeping dowm or up, § Will allow the pilot an opportunity to get the feel of the craft. There should be no rush in the amount of time spent on the taxi testing stage. The aircraft first should be seneuvered around at speeds less than 10 mph, ‘The steering and brakes may be checked here. On a cain day (in early morning) start driving the "Xono-Fly" éown @ Tunway at around 20 mph. There should be no tendency to fly at this speed unless a 10 mph headwind is experienced. Aileron ovenent at this speed will produce e slight roiling response. “High speed" (25-30 mph) testing comes next, ifake several runs down the runway, each tine edging the speed up by about 2-3 mph until the aircraft becomes light and responds to slight movement in the controls, Be alert during this testing because it becomes difficult to tell whether or not you're eotually on the ground. lo not exceed 28 mph during this phase. First Flight Again the craft should underzo a complete inspection. The pilot should feel confident that more than enough tari testing has been done and that the controls have become "second nature", The weather should be calm with little traffic in the area, Although the "“ono-Fly" flies well in mild winds, cala air will give the pilot less to contend with on this important occasion. The first few flights should be straight down the runway at an altitude of 10-15 feet, landing with room to spare. Suggest 3000-4000 foot stretea of runway. ‘The initial roll is similar to the last high speed taxi tests but with more power used, If a full throttle setting is used, it should be cut back slightly just after takeoff to stey close to the runway. Take off will occur at about 30 mph. Because of the rearward location S.nBOLS AND ABBREVIATIONS USED IN PLANS Taw Part number Dassni now 3 digit nuabers used for part identification. Because of this 30 mph takeoff, there should be no concern of stalls, but the nose shoald not be raised as the airplane will cliab in 2 fairly level attitude, During these "runway flights" the controls may be tested in the air. ove- ment should be gentle. This airplane is very easy to land. The slow speeds give generous time to operate controls and the trike gear won't allow ground looping. To land, gradually cut back on the power until the ground gets a couple feet away, then add a little power. With practice, landings can be feather soft. After these practice flights have becon altitude and leave the runway crea. 411 slight turns can be made with little or x or descent angle can be controlled large change in the yoke setting. Designed for airplane pilots, this ultralight makes anyone used to flying Cessnas or Pipers feel right at home By Glenn Brinks AT THE ULTRALIGHT ‘ly.in, everyone's head swiveled almost at once. Over the high-pitched rasp of the two strokes “came a deeper, mellower drone, unmistakably fox stroke and somehow, antique soun- ding. It was Bob Teman’s Mono-Fly, uttering along with an. air-cooled, bbvorcylinder flathead for power, Not an antique engine, but an aluminum block Onan generator engine, it is the same one used in the popular Quickie omebuilt, pre ‘Teman’s airplane is at the other end of the performance spectrum from the super-slick, 100 plus mph Quickie. It's closer to an ultralight than anything else, even though it is a registered airplane. Top speed is about 50 mph, and staliimush comes at about 20-25 mph. Unlike many ultralights, the Mono- Fly uses true three-axis controls with ailerons, rudder and elevator. The rud- der pedals also control the steerable nosewheel, and just as in an airplane, you push right to go right, ‘A final touch of similarity to air- planes is the pitch and roll control, ‘which is by control yoke rather than 20 ULTRALIGHT AIRCRAFT stick, Anyone used 0 Ayng Cessnas or Pipers would fee ight home Set-up on the Mono-Fly is quick and easy because the fuselage assembly stays together, Once isc the tele, Si that required to pu together io attach the wings ot he (useloge, bolt Gn the struts, “connect the. aleron Cables and preflight. While 1000 feet altitude should be maintained over Populated areas, the best flying is low and slow over the country- Side. Skillful use of winds deflecting off bills and thermal currents can enhance this feeling. The use of a bluct wing leading edge, thick chord, and a 3° wing twist eliminate normal stalls. Cables should not touch each other. Check for vibration during engine run-up. Do not overtighten bolts and nuts when used es 2 pivot point for contro! levers. Overtigntening will cause controle to work hard. Thin plestic or phenolic washers may be used between aoving parts to give easter control novecent. All bolts used to secure moving parts have a cotter pin or lock pin besides the usual lockaut. STABILATOR CONTROL ‘The stadilator cables zre connected to the base of the control pedestal and run below the frame, cross each other, and connect to a control lever at the rear end of tne frame, The cables are cupported near the cain gear to prevent vibration, 4 pulley is used near the seat as a guide. Adjustment can be made by changing the length of the 801 end clips. This aay de done at the control pedestal or at the rear control lever, Adjustaent can also be made using turnbuckles, hovever, they add extra Weight and are costly. The cables should be cut and installed so thet a vertical position (perpendiczler to frase) of the control pedestal will put the etabiletor in a flat horizontal position. this ‘is approxinately where the stabilator will be during level flight at cruise speed. The rudder is controlled using cables connected to a foot bar. The foot bar works in the same aanner as pedale: push left for left rudder aud push right for right rudder. The cables run from the foot bar along both sidee of the fraue, thru pulleys at the tail, and connect to eye bolts on both sides of the rudder, Cable vibration is dampened vy adding support near the aain gea: Agjustnent is made by rearranging the washers used with the foot bar eyevolts, Be sure pulleys tura freely and that cable hes no tendency to jump off pulley, amRorTt CONTROL mae throttle control is an 8 ft long Mercury outboard motor “push-pull” cable, It is fastened to the control pedestal using @ pivoting bracket. ‘The cable is routed under and up behind the seat, then over the fusl tank, The cable is anchored to a frane gusset with the aovaple ent. fastened to 2 lever on the engine (see engine drawings). The throttle should be adjusted to give idle-to-full settings. Ynen set, the throttle should be checked for "creep", @aking sure the engize speed doesn’t creep up or down due to vibration, Anthough this type throttle cable works well, other types (or arrange aents) ary be used with good judgenent. BRaXe CONTROL Whe brake is actusted ty pushing far forward on the control pedestal. This tightens a single cable attached to the brake and bottos of ¢ deatal, Instead of svaging the caple 2t the brake connection, it hay be wrapped around bolt Detween 307 brackets. The bolt will provide a clanping action when tightened and aay be adjusted. THE CONTROL SYSTSH The control system consists of aileron, rudder, stabilator, engine throttle, and brake controls shown on the attached drawings. Tae stabilator, rudder, and brake are controlled using 3/32" dianeter 7X7 galvanized aircraft cable. The cable is cut to length and each end is wrapped around a thisble and "using a sleeve and swaging tool. THIMBLE — SLEEVE. (SWAGE ON) SWAGED CABLE BND ATLEROW conmnots The ailerons are controlled by Mercury outboard sotor "push-pull" cables(i2)This type of contre] eliminates the need for 2 cor systen of pulleys and cables and makes it easier to detach wing for transport or storage. No modifications are necessary to these control cables except for grinding off a small plastic tab on the control yoke end of cable: The cables are attached to a steering yoke, run up thra the wing strut fairing, and connect at the wing anchor and aileron. ‘hen the wing is renoved, the cables are disconnected from the wing anchor and aileron and pulled out of the wing strut, They may be coiled and draped over seat back for storage. Adjustnent can be made where the cable is clanped to the control pedestal, The wing connection aleo can provide fine adjustaent by turning the black aylon support on threaded ea of cable assembly. trailing edge of the ailerons should be set in line with the edge of the wing when in the neutral position. The steering i11 be in the neutral (level) position. hen the yoke is turned the left aileron will rise approximately 45° (aex) and the right eileron will lower approximately 30° (aax). Full right yoke Will give opposite travel. Mark these two locations with a piece of tape on ‘the fram C—-WING SPAa. GewreuNe, AIRCRAET SHOVLD Barance BEWELNY THESE MARKS USE sack. The 74" mark is the aft allowable CG and represents 30% of the chord width (48"). This mark should be verified by dropping a plumbob from the center- line of the wing spar tube (or center of attachment on frame). The plumbob should be on this 74" mark in a level position. The 69.2" mark is a theo- retical forward allowable representing 20% of the chord width. The balance point should never be forward of this 69.2" mark. Now sit in the seat in.a flying position and have someone put a car jack under the frame until the balance point is found. It should fall between the two marks. A 25% balance point (centered halfway between two marks) should work best for test flights but the 30% point (74") will give best performance. Remember, the further forward this balance point, the more stable the flight will be, Not the most efficient though. shift an accessory fore or aft as necessary to achieve a balance point between the marks. Many builders have ~ added 10 to 12 lbs. weight at the tail to compensate for extra accessories or their heavier weight. Agter some experience you will be able to feel the best setting. With the stabilator flat (neutral) the "Mono-Fly" should enter a gentle glide when the throttle is retarded and climb with higher throttle settings. A 6" x 12" piece of this sheet aluminum may be added to the: trailing edge of the stabilator and bent as required to give "hands-off" trim. Each drawing has a title block in the lower right hand corner containing the name of the part or assenbly, the drawing scale, and other information. Notes pertaining to construction are found in the upper left corner or on 2 separate attached sheet. Each part hes an individual 3-digit number. This number is used to identify the part on the assembly drawings where all components are fastened together. The drawings are stapled together in sections. Each section represents a pertioular assembly or system. The first drawing in each section shows the assembly of all parts shown on remaining sheets. The plans have been reduced 62% to keep down printing costs. If a dimension needs to be scaled, multiply reading by 1.6 (also allow for scale indicated on drawing). A full sized wing chord drawing is provided as well 2s a coordinate drawing. Sither may be used to construct the wing ribs. Drawing revisions, with any improvements or changes, will be sent occasionally. If any difficulty or vagueness is found in the plans, please contact Tenan Aircraft and a revision will be sent to plans holders. Once the frane is built, the landing gear should be added. This will allow all other parts to be attached imaediately upon completion. The flying surfaces, wings and tail, should be built last. They are bulky and would otherwise require storage to prevent sossible damage during fabrication of other items. ‘The controls are: hooked up when the craft is completely asseabled. Adjustment can be made during installation, ~DISCLAINER= All risks associated with construction and operation must be assuned by the builder. Teazn Aircraft will accept no liability whatsoever in connection therewith. Hono-Fly Tee "Hono-Fly" has conventional J-exis controls, trike gear with suspension and brake, 12-volt electrical system, 4-cycle engine with direct drive prop and a highly stressed structure. Cruise speed is 35 mph, with a top speed of about 50 mph. The use of a blunt wing leading edge, thick chord, and a 3° wing twist eliminate noraal stalls. 4 full aft yoke will cause the plane to mish forward in a fully controlled stall. Full power and full aft yoke will bring the nose up and the “Nono~Ply" will mush along at 20 mh. Landing is easy with the soft and forgiving suspension. Touchdown is at 25-30 mph.
