Lesson activities for instructor and students Write quotes on board: - Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot physically see with his eyes... Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an explosion into unknown areas. (Arshile Gorky) - Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for color, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential. (Wassily Kandinsky) - Abstraction demands more from me than realism. Instead of

reproducing something outside of me, now I go inward and use everything I've learned thus far in my life. (Susan Avishai) TUESDAY 11/12 Learning Target-TSW learn how to use color to make an effective abstract piece. TSW know this when he/she picks a color theme for the piece and begins using it. WENDESDAY 11/13 TargetTSW learn to check to make sure his/her piece is balanced. TSW know this when the pieces feels balanced after flipping it on each side. THURSDAY 11/14 TargetTSW learn to give feedback to peers and incorporate it into final piece. TSW know this when the student incorporates feedback into his/her piece. FRIDAY 11/15 TargetTSW learn how to be sure colors are balanced in his/her piece. He/she will know this when warm/cool and light/dark colors are evenly placed through the piece MONDAY 11/18 TargetTSW participate effectively in a critique. TSW know this when he/she makes several constructive comments in the critique.
