Rationale: The students will use prior knowledge of basic double digit multiplication to further their learning with three by two digit multiplication. The teacher will guide the students through review, modeling, and practice. Common Core Standards(Math Enrichment Lesson):CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.B.5Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. Behavioral Objective: The student will understand how to multiply three by two digits. They will practice and learn through partners and individual work. Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills: The students should know basic multiplication. The students should also know the basic strategies for multiplication for double digits. Materials: Smart Board interactive containing modeling problems, word problems, and examples 4 Guided practice problems 5 Independent practice problems Pencil Paper
will use the area model to complete this problem with the class. **CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING** Make sure students are on task and understand how to solve the problem. Guided Practice: Pass out worksheet containing four word problems. (see below) Students will work with a partner to complete these problems. The teacher will walk around and check if they solved the problem correct or not. Independent Practice: When the students are finished with the guided practice, they will complete a worksheet containing five word problems multiplying two by three digit numbers. (See below) Closure: Students will turn in their independent practice. We will go over a few of the guided practice problems to make sure all students are on the same track. Evaluation: The students will be evaluated on showing their work while solving the word problems. Also, students will be evaluated on participation and if they completed the required assignments. Plans for Individual Differences: ELL students will be sat with a classmate who can help them during the lesson. Students will be partnered fairly so that the partners are all the same and no one group is better than the other. Students with visual and auditory impairments will sit near the front for more engaging learning.
