INDIRECT INSTRUCTION LESSON PLAN FORMAT Elementary Science ______________________________________________________________________________ Big Idea: Students will be able to create an animal that has an adaptation that will allow them to survive in a specific biome. Grade Level: 4th grade Rationale: Students need to know what type of adaptations animals including humans use to survive in their biome. This helps the student understand why animals have the traits they have and develop a respect and understanding for the ecosystem. NC Science Essential Standards: 4.L.1 Understand the effect of environmental change, adaptions and behaviors that enable animals (including humans) to survive in changing habitats. Next Generation Science Standards: Animals including humans have adaptations to help them survive in their ecosystem. 3-LS4-4 Make a claim about themerit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the type of plants and animals that live there may change. Disciplinary Core Idea:

LS4.C: Adaptation: For any particular environment, some kinds of organisms survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all. (3-LS4-3)

Instructional Objective:
Students will be able to hypothesize and record data that they collect. Students will know that the weight of ice is the same as the weight of the melted ice.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills: The teacher and the students should know what the different biomes are as well as adaptions that animals have in those biomes. Students should also know what characteristics such as climate each biome has. The teacher needs to know how to use the internet and what link to use for the video. Materials/Resources: Plain white paper (20) Crayons Colored Pencils Large Sheet of paper. Science Journals (each student should have their own) Markers Cards with biome names on them My Biome Song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A5eeE93uEA to be preset up by the teacher that should already be preset up and ready to push play. Source: Mallard Creek Elementary 4th grade planning meeting discussion. Adapted idea to work for my needs and class.

Estimated Time: About 30-35 min. Accommodation for Special Needs: LD: I will have the student work in a group of students w/out LD. DS: The student depending on the level she is this day will work in a group or one on one with the teacher/ TA. ESL: Pair them with non ESL students. ______________________________________________________________________________ Content and Strategies (Procedure) Engage: The teacher will tell the students to watch the video about biomes and record the information they learn about each of the 6 biomes in their science journals. Teacher will play My Biome Song from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A5eeE93uEA Explore:

The teacher will then have a few students tell what characteristics they heard in the video about the 6 biomes as the teacher writes them down on a large sheet of paper Teacher will ask what are some of the animals we see in each of these biomes? What adaptations do these animals have that help them survive in the biome? Elaborate: The teacher will split the class into small groups of 2-3 students and give each group a card with their biome on it. The teacher will then tell the students that they are going to create their own made up animal that will live in their biome on the blank sheet of paper. They must tell us what the animal is, what biome it lives in, what its adaptation is, and why does the adaptation help the animal survive. Explanation: Groups will take turns coming up to the front of the class and tell everyone about their animal, making sure to tell everyone what the animal is, what biome it lives in, what its adaptation is, and why does the adaptation help the animal survive. Evaluate: The teacher will collect the students animals with the information of what the animal is, what biome it lives in, what its adaptation is, and why does the adaptation help the animal survive. If the students were able to justify why their animal had the adaptation it did for their given biome they met the objective.
