The Lesson Introduction:

Assignment: Students will create a relief print with a technique of block reduction from a single block. The composition must have at least three colors. The print will be approximate 9 x 6 on white paper. The print edition will be fifteen, signed, and numbered, with title of the artwork. The grading will focus on technique, craftsmanship

Day 1:

Entry-level assessment: Objective: 3.1 Identify similarities and differences of the art of selected cultures. Teacher will give students prior knowledge worksheet to find out if they know the subject. (Serves as Introduction to Informal discussion.) I will assess the students prior knowledge about the printing process with any type of printing technique by asking students questions and probing for more knowledge through discussion. I will ask questions such as, What is a relief print? Has anyone ever made a print before? Has anyone ever heard about Johannes Gutenberg or Albrecht Drer? Assessments/Activities ELA German Renaissance/Prezi Lecture Body of Lecture (Direct Instruction) Objective: Direct Instruction: Demonstrations Unit Introduction Prezi Lecture. Teacher will distribute handout; students will fill it in on the lecture. Teacher will give a brief introduction on the invention of the Guttenberg Press and new technique to produce books during the early Renaissance. Through examples, teacher will highlight Albrecht Drers brilliance both as a draftsman and a master of woodcuts and engraving. Show examples of my previous artwork: relief and engraving prints Go over packet, explain project and discuss rubric Closure: Instruction on critical question #1 (Homework) Talk about starting the planning pages or sketching a drawing for this project Watch the two videos from the lecture and answer critical question #1 Teacher will give handout, which lists materials and tools. Answer questions and/or clarify any points. Notes: Assessment: Process Objective: 2.1 create an original work of art using wood print process to combine image and literature content to explore how books were made and then give reflection on the overall project. Assessments/Activities (Workday) Direct Instruction Demonstrations: Lecture Relief /Registration/Signed Edition. Teacher will give a demonstration of relief technique (how to transfer drawing onto linoleum block) and safety tips. Assessment guideline

Day 2:

Distribute handouts on the example of solving problem on relief technique and registration and document with vocabulary assignment as well Assessment /Guideline Teacher will mention additional sources that show step-by-step relief printing techniques through videos. Students may find these resources using an Internet search engine such as Google or by going directly to Youtube. Teacher will give instructions and a demonstration on registration and how to sign the edition. Discuss the assignment of soft-cut or linoleum reduction, using at least 3 colors. (Start with light to dark colors. Its similar to the watercolor technique.) Progress Monitoring/Individual Practice Students will work on a small piece of soft-cut for practice before starting cut out using the good block. Students will finish the planning pages and have their final rendering to transfer their drawing onto the block. Closure Work on homework and remind students of the midpoint critique is due on day 4. Notes:

Day 3: - Objective: 3.1 Identify similarities and differences in the art of selected cultures. - Assessments/Activities /Workday Body: Direct Instruction Show video on Northern Renaissance (part #1) Students will compare and contrast early work of the printing press with digitally produced pages. Explain the similarities and differences on the print pages produced by the two techniques. Progress Monitoring /Individual Practice Students will work on the project Students who need help must write their names on the board. Other students can complete their tasks independently. Teacher will record student progress, homework completion, class participation, assistance, etc. on class roster. Closure: Remind students of midterm in next class meeting and that everyone must participate and get feedback to rework/correct their work. Notes:

Day 4: Performance Assessment/Group Discussion/ Midpoint Critique Objective: 1.4 Analyze and describe how the composition of artwork is affected by use of a particular principal of design Progress Monitoring /Individual Practice Assessment/Activities/Workday - Working with a partner or in a group. - Students turn in Compare and Contrast assignment - Closure: Remind students to work on project, final critique and research paper due on day 8 Notes: Day 5: Objective: 5.4 Identify professions in or related to the visual art and some of the specific skills needed for those. Progress Monitoring /Individual Practice Assessment/Activities/Workday Working with a partner or in a group. Students turn in compare and contrast assignment Closure: Remind students to work on final project, critique and research paper due on day 8 Notes: Progress Monitoring /Individual Practice Assessment/Activities/Workday To get assistance from teacher, student will write name on board and get help. Closure: Students who are still working on the project as the deadline approaches are reminded they have no more than two classes before the final critique is due. Notes: Progress Monitoring /Individual Practice Assessment/Activities/Workday Students who are still working on the project one day before the deadline will be reminded that the final critique is due in the next class. Closure: Remind students to begin to prepare for final critique due in the next class. Finish work, essay on new technology or art schools and check planning pages in notebooks.

Day 6: -

Day 7:

Notes: Day 8: Student Journals Objective: 4.5 Identify what was done when a personal work of art was reworked and explain how those changes improved the artwork? Progress monitoring /Individual Practice Summative Assessment: Final critique Students will display artwork for critique (everybody must participate) Students will discuss content and intention of their work. Students will also discuss the process of creating work. Students will present their reflections. Students will identify what was done and discuss what was reworked. Students turn in notebooks and final essay on new technology or art schools. Vote and applaud.

- Daily Lesson Introduction:

Students will clean up and put away materials before they leave the classroom. Write vocabulary words on board daily. Have computer ready and power point ready. Remind students of due dates. Record student data on roster everyday.

- Lesson Closure:
Review the artwork of the relief printing technique developed during the Renaissance. The groundbreaking technique of woodcut printing had a profound effect on the fledgling printing industry. This technique became the most popular way to illustrate books during the Renaissance. Introduce the students to the new project. Review connections of the past to the present. Help students summarize and make connections to the course objectives.

Reflection on the Lecture.
