Hensel English III November 20, 2013 Teenage Pregnancy Teens in society now are having unprotected sex without caution, and without the proper understanding can lead to teen pregnancy. There are 16 out of 1000 children that are born to teenage mothers between the ages of 15 and 19. (Rising Children Network). Young teen mothers are even less likely to graduate from high school. (Teen Pregnancy & Education). Young teens do not think about having sexual intercourse. Some teens have sex, because it makes them think they are above age, or they are following their friends. Teenagers today need to consider the decision to engage in sexual intercourse. Teen parents face many options, such as dealing with abortions, giving their child up for adoption, and raising their child alone. The teen parent will have the choice to choose between medical abortion, and surgical abortion. Medical abortion is used during the first forty- nine days of pregnancy. It consist two different drugs, which are Methotrexate and Imfepristone which may be followed by another drug called misoprosal. A surgical abortion is a vacuum aspiration. A surgical abortion is the most common type of abortion. It is a surgical procedure that involves anesthesia and can be performed within the first trimester of pregnancy (Brown). In todays society surgical abortion is the most likely choice of teens. The main two reasons why pregnant teens choose the decision of having an abortion; is because they are concerned about how the baby would change their lives and because the teen is not prepared or mature enough for the responsibilities to raise a baby.(Welton)

The teen parent goes through physical and emotional trauma when having an abortion. The physical affect that the teen has is the mother is twice as likely to experience cervical lacerations during abortion compared to older women. (Elliot Institute). The teen mother is less likely than adults to take prescribed antibiotics for the medical problems such as an infection. The emotional affect that the teen parents can face is how they felt after they had the abortion. Just thinking about how they killed an innocent little child, that didnt ask to be in the world. The teen parent will soon sit and think about what they did and regret the decision of having an abortion. (Abortion Emotional Side Effects). Mental health disorder can sometimes be trigged by an abortion. Some pregnant teens will come to the decision of adoption. Adoption is the social, emotional and legal process, where children will not be raised by their biological parents. The child will become part of another legal family. The teen parent may choose friend in adoption (FIA) which is a licensed, not for profit adoption agency founded in 1982. (Friends of Adoption) Most researchers came up with only an estimate of 5 percent of pregnant teen will place their infants up for adoption (The Teen Mother & Adoption). The two main reasons why teenagers put their babies up for adoption is because ; the teens may not be ready to become parents , and believes adoption is the best choice for their baby to be well cared for financially and emotional.(Friends of Adoption). A teen mom usually raises the baby on her own, because the father is less likely to share his income with the child. (McLanahan). In most situations the father leaves because of some selfless issues or not prepared for fatherhood, which scares most teen boys today. A baby is 25% more likely to grow up without a father and end up being a juvenile. The childs life without a father varies from the gender of the child. If the child is a boy, he would miss the opportunity of

having a father figure as a role model. If the child is a girl, she might grow up unconsciously hating men due to their resentment of their absent father. The mother of the child has to play both parts of being a parent to her child. She has to work to provide for her baby. If the mother is going to school, then she may want to continue going to school for a better education, and provide a better life for her child. Teen parents face many options, such dealing with abortions, giving their child up for adoption, and raising Pregnant teens have a lot to think about when they find out their pregnant. The pregnant teenager may think about dropping out of school, because its just too much for her to deal with. Around 70 percent of pregnant teens drop out of high school. Young teens shouldnt go through all of this, if they would just start focusing on school and not having unprotected sex, because being pregnant comes with a lot of decisions.
