Seats for States

Undesirable Behavior Targeted: When getting out of seat is not appropriate, it is a distraction to the class. This type of distraction can cause delays in lessons and can further complicate students learning. The distraction draws students attention towards somewhere else, rather than on the teacher. Desirable Behavior Targeted: Students should remain seated during appropriate times. The desk light represents those appropriate times for the students to remain in their seats. When the desk light is turned on, the students are expected to stay in their seats, with their hands on the desk, their feet on the floor, and their eyes on the teacher. Success is noted when every student remains in their seats until the light is turned off. Types of positive reinforcements 1. Immediate R+: As each success is noted, a letter of the word STATE will be written in order on board and class will be praised. 2. Delayed R+: If all five letters of the word STATE are written before the day ends, the class will earn five different cutouts of states to glue on United States map. When all 50 states are glued on the map, the goal is met. 3. Novel Interactive Learning Activity: When the goal is met, a class period will be dedicated to learning about the states. 4. How to Administer: If a success is noted as soon as the desk light is turned off, the class will be praised and a letter of the word STATE will be written in order on board. If all five letters are written, students will glue five states on the United States map posted on the wall at the end of day prior to dismissal. If done quickly, the distractions will be minimal. Interactive Learning Activity: When the goal is met, we will dedicate a class period to learn about the states. Class will draw a star on each state to represent that states capital city. We will write the capital cities, names, and abbreviations in each state. There will be 50 cutouts of state flowers and state birds to be glued on the states. Teaching Desired Behaviors: I will begin by explaining that they can earn states for seats. This is when I introduce the creative model of this plan (attached) to them. I will explain that when the desk light is turned on, they should remain seated by doing this: Feet on floor Hands on desk Eyes on the teacher (unless if told otherwise) Desk light ON means ON seats will be emphasized I will explain that if everyone stays seated until the light is off, a letter of STATE will be written on board Over the first several days of this plan, the students will develop an understanding of how the plan works. Teaching the Plan: This plan will be taught during the first week of school. This plan will be taught when class expectations and rules are explained. A creative model (attached) of this plan will be posted on the classroom bulletin board as a reminder. This plan will be implemented across all class periods to provide at least five opportunities for the students to earn letters for the states. This will be conducted in lower-elementary grades.
