Westward Expansion and the Native Americans

SC Social Studies Standard: 5-2.5 Explain the social and economic effects of the westward expansion on Native Americans, including changes in federal policies armed conflicts, opposing views concerning land ownership, and Native American displacement. Learning Objective: TSW create a timeline based on key events surrounding the effects of westward expansion on Native Americans from 1868-1890. Essential Question: What were the social and economic effects of westward expansion on Native Americans? Assessment: TSW write at least 2 important facts under each topic of his timeline. TTW grade the graphic organizer according to the scoring guide, record in Teacher Kit, and return it to TS to be filed with other social studies notes. Activities Procedures: Opening: TTW draw out knowledge from previous lesson through a quick review. o TSW work in table groups to complete the What Would YOU Do? activity and present opinions to the class. o Transition: Lets see how these two groups reacted in the midst of conflict. Activities: o TTW give each student a graphic organizer timeline and explain the procedures for completing it. o Using PowerPoint, TTW share content from pages 156-159 according to the timeline; TSW fill in dates, titles, and at least 2 important facts about each topic as the teacher discusses material. Closure: o Exit Slip What was one social and one economical effect of westward expansion on Native Americans based on the material youve learned today?
