There should be clear, specific objectives. Students should be placed in mixed-teams based upon ability, gender, and ethnicity to better round out the diversity of the group. An array of study materials can be used, the materials should require clearly correct or incorrect answers. STAD should allow all students the equal opportunity for success, no matter the mixture of the groups gender, ethnic background, or abilities. Effort should be recognized. A students base score is the students average on past test and quizzes, their improved should come from this and the student should be rewarded if their score is higher than the base score.

Teachers must review, introduce the lesson, explain and model the content and while students practice, the teacher monitors their efforts. The first phase, is where the teacher explains the skill and models within a wholegroup setting. Next, the students move from whole-group instruction and prep for team study. Next, students practice performing academic skills. Last, improvement points and team awards are given. The team scoring will be based upon the improvement of individual students within each group.

A quiz or test is the simplest form of assessment which can be used to evaluate the students assessment. The teacher can assess whether or not the students are learning personal responsibility, and can function as productive teams. The questions to think about during assessment of each group are: Are all members contributing? Are any or some members dominating? Is the groups interaction positive and supportive? Do males and females equally contribute? Are students from different racial and ethnic groups participating and are they being included? The teacher should assess the depth of knowledge from each expert and how clearly they can explain content according to their grade/age

The students will be motivated to earn improvement points by giving them the extra incentive of rewarding them with points based on how well they do and their average grade. By grouping students into well balanced teams helps motivate them to work together, especially if they know that they have a personal responsibility within the group. The personal responsibility often motivates the students more so if they are receiving credit or a grade for it.

So what? What is important to understand about this? The STAD strategy allows students the opportunity to work as a group to develop social skills as well as accomplish certain specific objectives that are set by the teacher. STAD allows students to work together to learn an individual skill and help their teammates in understanding the skill, an example would be like a certain math processes .
