If the kids are too keen and everyone wants to answer (or in 'unior (igh when none of the wants to answer))!* then a good way to choose who answers the questions is to use the +all and ,usic -a e i.e. pass a all around whilst playing so e usic* when you stop the usic that kid has to answer)

Shiritori!
Target Maths: Any sums Target grade: Elem 4 to adults This is a great war up ga e fro 'apan for older ele entary or .unior high kids) The traditional way to play it is to write a word* then the ne/t kid co es and writes another word that $egins with the last letter of the previous word. 0ike this.... In this aths version the kids have to write a su with the last nu $er of the previous su e.g. 11223 33221 11#2% % 3 2 2 " etc. Here's ho to !lay""" 1. 4plit the kids into groups. 2. 4tart the stopwatch 3. The front person fro each group writes a su on the $oard e.g. 54 1 2 2 #5 on the $oard. +ut the first nu $er of their su has to start
4. The ne/t person fro the group co es up and writes a su that starts with the last nu $er of the previous su . e.g. if the last su was 54 1 2 2 #5 the new su could $e 5# 3 3 2 35 or 5# 1 4 2 165 etc. ". &epeat fro step 4 has the ost su s) arks for
#. 7hen the ti e is up* see which tea It8s great to play so e loud longer or cooler su s))

Sticky Fingers
Target Grade:1-4 Target Maths: Any #uestions
9ou play this ga e with 3 kids at a ti e. :or $igger classes you can have several tea s going at once. Teach or review so e questions * clear so e space in the classroo * then...
1. The kids each gra$ one of the teacher8s fingers* which are outstretched as shown. 2. The teacher assigns a special 54ecret Answer5
3. ;ne kid shouts out a nu $er e.g. 545 ". The teacher uses the nu $er to #. If the answer to the su ake a su e.g. 4 1 % 2 ust run to the far wall.
%. If on the way* the teacher 5tigs5 a kid* they are out. <. If a kid lets go when the answer isn8t the 54ecret Answer5 (e.g. if the 4ecret Answers is 5%5 and the kid runs when the su is 53 / 25! then they are out)) =. &epeat fro 2 until only one kid is left. ore kids.
11. 7hen everyone has had a go* try it again with 3 winners. >eep playing with the winners* .ust like a cha pionship* until you find the ulti ate winner) This ga e works really well at lower levels. 4tart off easy* $ut you can get quite advanced* for e/a ple letting all the kids think of a nu $er * e.g. kid one says 525* kid two says 5 1 4 2 #5 then ne/t kid says 5 ? 2 2 125 and then the teacher has to add another part to the su )

A very fun ga e )) 1. All the students for a large ring in the classroo .
2. 4elect 2 students that will play the ga e. 3. These 2 then face each other in the centre of the ring.
4. @sing a clip fasten a card with a nu $er onto the $ack of each student. ". The kids ust always have their hands $ehind their $ack.
#. -et the

%. The kids now have to try and see what card is on their opponents $ack.
<. 7hen they know what8s on the card* they put their hand in the air and tell you a su where the answer is the nu $er on the card. As the teacher you can decide if any su is ;>* or if it has to $e a division* addition etc. =. If heAshe is correct they win)
step 3.
,ake sure the kids who for the ring don8t shout out the answer) Insist that the kids always have their hands $ehind their $acks. They ust also always stay inside the ring. 'u ping is one of the $est tactics 3 hence the 5;strich -a e5) And yeah* I know the picture at the top of the page is a duck* $ut I couldn8t find a cute ostrich picture)

Grade: 1 to 6
This is a cool ga e for s aller classes. 9ou need to prepare 2 or 3 s all cuddly toys. >oalas are cool)
1. 4it the kids in a circle. 2. Ask the kids a question e.g. 57hat8s % / 3 C5 3. Dass the koala to a kid who answers correctly. 4. The kids then pass the koalas a ongst the selves. :irst of all a kid says a su the kid who answers quickest. ". 9ou can also try a continuous su and then passes the koala to
e.g. 57hat8s 1 1 2C5* then the ne/t kid asks 57hat8s 53 / "C5 etc.
Euring the practice sessions* the teacher can introduce several koalas so that lots of kids get to practice. This is a really effective ga e if you give personalities to your cuddly toys. The fact that the ani als have na es see s to ake the kids respect the ore and take $etter care of the )) This is a good ga e* $ut don8t overplay it) And yes* I do know that8s not a koala at the top of the page 3 you try finding a cute ani ated koala on the we$* it8s not easy) F !

&tring Game!
Target Grade:*-6 Target Maths: Counting or +asi% sums 're!aration: 'ie%es o, string o, -arious lengths
This is a very popular ga e) 1. 4plit the class into groups of 4 or " people. 2. Tell the to &ock* Daper* 4cissors ( see the -enki Gnglish song! within the group to select who will $e the first person* the second* third etc. 3. The first person fro each group stands up and takes a piece of string fro your hand.
4. The person with the longest piece gets to play the ga e. ". That kid then co es to the front.
#. The student then winds the string around their finger. +ut they can only wind the string when they are saying outloud an su s they know. %. 7hen they are not talking they can8t wind the string. They only wind when they are saying su s. <. 7hen they get to the end their tea =. The second in line kid fro 16. Bontinue fro step ". gets a point. The kids return the string to the teacher.
:or the string I use $rightly coloured shoe laces. I have four that are .ust one lace long* 3 that are 2 strings tied together* one that is 3 laces long and one that is four laces long. That way its easy to co pare who has the longest string) The kids learn to cheat $y watching what colour is the longest. +ut if you have each end of the long ones a different colour you can change which end is at the top and hence confuse the ) Another good idea is to play the Briss Bross ga e and have the last three kids co e to the front to play the 4tring -a e) This ti e all 3 of the have to speak* $ut so e people will have short strings which is quite fun)
http://genkienglish.net/maths/
The coolest thing a$out this is that so eti es kids will $e convinced they can8t get to the end of the string. They ay even $egin to cry) +ut if you have taught the the golden rule of 5losing doesn8t ean losing* it .ust eans try again)5* their friends will keep pushing the on saying 59ou can do it)5. ;nce they do get to the end they8ll have a huge feeling of achieve ent)
http://genkienglish.net/maths/
This is $asically a scoring ga e* and can $e used in various different ways. (ere8s one variation using the +all and ,usic -a e. 1. Dut the kids in groups (# is usually good!* $ut keep the seated at their desks. 2. Eraw pictures of trees on the $oard* one tree for each group. Gach tree has = 5rungs5 (add ore or less depending on the a ount of ti e you wish to play!* and so e $ananas at the top. (see the picture a$ove! This takes a$out 1 inute if you8re quick) 3. Gach tea then has an ani al which will cli $ the tree (e.g. ,onkey* >oala* $ut also things like 5cow5 or 5helicopter5 are very a using)!. G/plain that the ai of the ga e is to eat the $ananas at the top) 4. Euring the ga e you play so e usic (so ething fast and dancey!. 7hen the usic plays the kids pass a $all around (no throwing))!.
The Koala Team have got 2 questions right, so have moved up 2 places!
http://genkienglish.net/maths/
usic.
#. 9ou then ask the person holding the $all a question ( e.g. 57hat8s 2 / <C5 * 57hat8s the ne/t nu $er 3* #* = * 12 C5 etc. ! %. If the student gets it right then their tea 8s ani al cli $s one rung up the tree) <. &epeat fro $ananas) step 4 until one tea reaches the top 3 and the The Helicopter team only needs one more correct answer to reach the bananas!!
= rungs lasts a$out 26 inutes. After the first few tries I then ask questions that are worth 2 5rungs5* or even ask the kids if they want an easy question for 1 point or a tricky one for 2 points)) The $est thing a$out this ga e is that the kids really think that $eing a helcopter gives the an advantage or $eing a hippo hinders the )
http://genkienglish.net/maths/
1. 4plit the class into # tea s. If they are in colu ns of desks then saying the left had colu n is tea ne/t tea 2 etc. is usually the $est.
2.;n the $oard draw # li $less* featureless faces and $odies. 3. Tell the front person in each group to stand up. 4. 9ou then ask the kids who are stood up a question e.g. 57hat8s 3 / #C5 or 57hat8s this shapeC5 or even things like 5(ow any legs does a spider haveC5 The quickest one to answer is the winner.
". The winner rolls the inflata$le dice. #. If they get a 515 they can draw an eye on their tea 8s face. If they have a 525 they can draw an ear. 4i ilarly*535 is a nose* 545 is a outh* 5"5 is an ar and 5#5 is a leg.
http://genkienglish.net/maths/
Here we threw a " " so can draw an arm! %. +ut each tea can only have one nose* one outh* and two each of the ears* eyes* ar s and legs. :or e/a ple if your tea has already 2 ar s* and you roll another nu $er 5"5 then that go is a 5pass5 $ecause you can8t add another ar ) This really helps the weaker tea s catch up (and so eti es win)))!
<. The ne/t person in each group stands up and repeat fro
=. The winning tea is the first tea to get 2 eyes* 2 ears* 1 nose* 1 ti e then the tea with the ost features is the winner) The eyes* ears* etc. are drawn on one at a ti e.
In Dri ary 4chool the kids can get very good and it can often $e difficult to tell who has answered the question the fastest) I8 still working on this pro$le * trying aking the questions ore difficult helps a $it. Eifferent nu $ers of students on each tea can $e good as you have different opponents each ti e.
