Compromise of 1850: Signed by Millara Fillmore dealt with the controversy, whether California should join as a free or slave stat. Mexican cession lands became New Mexico Runaway Slaves: Slave that would run away from their masters home by crossing the line by going under underground tunnels, in search for freedom Fugitive Slave Law: Bloodhound Bill slaves who escaped could not testify in their behalf and werent allowed a trial jury. If the judge freed the slave judge would get $5 and if not he would get $10. Officers expected to catch runaway slaves that would then be fined or jailed. Popular sovereignty: a pre-Civil
War doctrine asserting the right of the people living in a newly organized territory to decide by vote of their territorial legislature whether or not slavery would be permitted there

Norths Perspective/ Argument

Souths Perspective/ Argument

It was a fair compromise that gave a balance to both sides.

It was good for South and it was a comfortable compromise between having to battle which states were free or slave.

North like this compromise except for popular sovereignty. This would allow California to be a free state. It would also end slave trade in the nations capital, giving America a more respected reputation. North were ok with Slaves in search for freedom. Blamed the south for making them run away in the first place. Made it easier to fight against slavery. North thought this law was unfair to slaves and only did good for the jury. It was unconstitutional and angered northern and especially abolitionists.

The south thought it was an unfair balance between free and slave states. Wanted new lands to have popular sovereignty in order to spread slavery. Didnt want to get rid of slave trade since it is a big part of slavery. South is not happy with their slaves running away. It is creating problems for them.

South was content with this law because they would be able to catch their runaway slaves and would allow them to be punished.

North didnt like it because it went against the Missouri Compromise. Whenever slavery would spread it would be bad.

South liked it and thought it was fair for people to vote as a democracy. Believed slavery would spread this way.

Kansas- Nebraska Act: In 1854 Kansas and Nebraska would come into the union under popular sovereignty. This new law repealed the Missouri Compromise. Bloody Kansas: When Kansas was being decided as free or slave in 1857 there were enough free soldiers to over-rule slave-soldiers. This disagreement lead to fighting

North didnt like the idea of popular sovereignty, so it was a very risky move in seeing if the states would be free. The south were getting their way again. This was a great event that could be backfired on the South and made them look bad, for having people drop to the lowness of killing people to prove a point.

South thought it was a fair trade and hoped people would vote for slavery.

It did not look good for the people of the South and showed the bad treatment of the south.

Uncle Toms Cabin: Harriet Beecher Stowe seized the emotional power of this theme by putting it at the heart of, she was determined to awaken the North Dred Scott Case: A Missouri slave sued for his freedom, claiming that his four year stay in the northern portion of the Louisiana Territory made free land by the Missouri Compromise had made him a free man. The U.S, Supreme Court decided he couldn't sue in federal court because he was property, not a citizen. John Brown: a militant abolitionist that took radical extremes to make his views clear. In May of 1856, Brown led a group of his followers to Pottawattamie Creek and launched a bloody attack against pro-slavery men killing five people. Election of 1860: Election time where Democrats had split into Northern and Southern wings, great troubles finding a nominee, while Republicans chose Lincoln,

This awakened abolitionists even more and allowed them to preach more about it. This gave a good example on how slaves were unjustly treated and the harshness they had to go through. It was unconstitutional and unfair, because he was a free man and should have had the unalienable rights.

This made slave masters look bad and the South tried to repeal it by saying it was an exaggeration and a silly propaganda.

The South regarded him as a slave and not as a free man. They believed the court was correct.

This was used to make the Norths point clear on how Slavery was making people go crazy and the effect it was having on innocent men.

This made the south mad because one man had brought out a very ugly side about them. They thought the man was simply crazy and slavery didnt lead him to come to this measure.

This brought a bigger divide and it would be hard to choose a candidate that both sides would be content with.
