Tekeyla Jackson Child Case Study Child Development 201

Douglas R. was born on June 10, 2008. He is 5 years old with brown eyes. His hair color is jet black and cut very low. On February 19, 2013 was my first day observing Douglas. The day care is called Maggie Drummond it is located at 4301 south Wabash. They have two 3-5 year old class room which are named after the colors blue and yellow. Douglas was a part of the yellow room. He has been in this daycare since he was 3 years of age. The first time attending his classroom he catches my attention so he was selected. There are five developmental domains that I channeled in on. The first domain is his social skills. On Feb. 22, 2013 as listed on my check list, Douglas played very well with Michael. He made animals sounds will playing with the animals. He also observed others while they were playing. During lunch he talked to friend about his weekend. I went to chucky cheese and I won 200 hundred prices no 500 hundred Im a champion. Some of Douglas challenge in this area he sometimes he plays alone. He is very bossy and can be mean towards his friends. A book about being kind to your friends can help Douglas more. The second one is his emotional skills. Douglas greets his teacher with a warm hug each morning he enters the classroom. He looks concerns when children in the class are crying or hurt. On March 1, 2013 Ben fall outside on the playground Douglas went over and asked are you ok Ben do you need a band aid? His

challenges that he has is that he cries when teacher let him know he was doing wrong. He sometimes gets angry and hit his friends. Sometimes need to be address about following the rules. The activity that is set in place for to help Douglas is planning a small group activity about feelings. The third domain is physical. On February 28 2013 Douglas played on the playground with his friends. He runs, jumped, and played on the monkey bars very well he was able to make it to the third bar before he let go. During choice time he wrote a story in the literacy area he was able to hold the pen correctly. Some of the challenges he is facing is that he does not know how to tie his shoe. Another thing is that he does not know how to hop on one leg. Some activities that we can do are a large group time and have children practice hopping on one leg. Another activity is that I can bring in shoes and let Douglas practice tying them at his own free will. The fourth domain is cognitive. Douglas catches o really fast. He is able to answer question during group time. He thinks logically and problem solve successfully. On March 2, 2013 he was able to help the teacher for a day. Douglas went over the numbers the days of the week and even read his favorite book that day. He is really super in this area. The last domain is language. Douglas really needs help in these sera. His speak is difficult to understand at times. Douglas becomes frustrated when he cant get his words out. He sometimes stutters. I was informed on February 03, 2013 that Douglas was just evaluated and has and has an IEP on speech. On Monday he sees a speech therapist from 8a.m until 8:30 a.m. there has been some process in this area he now takes his time when speaking to others. The activity that was plan for Douglas is story dictation. Douglas would listen to a story and be asked open and ended questions about the story. After the story he would write his own story based off what he just heard.

There are many theories on how child develop. The most three popular seekers are Erikson, Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. The theory that best suits my child is Vygotsky. He stated that children learn threw everyday play. Vygotskys interest in language and literature blended with his interest in psychology and lead him to theorize about language/cognitive development in children. He also said that development of inner speech in children developed in the same manner as all other mental processes. His theory can be used as a map of language development in children. Vygotskys theory leads one to believe that language development takes place in a need to communication. Douglas speech will get better while playing and communicating with his friends.

In conclusion, Douglas is special in his own way and I think with the right teaching and support he will be just fine. I see so much potential in him. He loves expressing his self by drawing, coloring, talking to his close friends and through his everyday play. I understand that children learn on their own paste. Douglas is out going when he in the classroom he know his way around the room and do not mind assisting friends when they may need help. Only way children can learn is to introduce it in their everyday play. We must not forget that children are not to be drilled but to enjoy learning through play. It is so important that we select the appropriate activities and the right equipment for the children especially when dealing with science. As a teacher you must make sure things are safe and well structured. Children develop very quickly, so we must work together to keep their brains working. There are so many

standards and procures we must follow when preparing lesson plans. Observing Douglas was fun. He taught me a lot. Douglas has made me a better teacher and a better planner for the future. Douglas will be a child to remember and i see him doing wonderful in the future.
