Planning a STAD lesson is a four part process: -Planning Whole group instruction: is where the teacher prepares clear learning objectives, high-quality examples, and promotes interaction between students. -Organizing groups: Prepare ahead of time groups of 4-5 members that are mixed in ability, gender, and ethnicity. -Planning Team Study: Requires prep of high-quality materials with specific instruction that lines up with the set learning goals. The materials should require convergent answers that can be marked as either correct or incorrect. -Calculating base scores & improvement points: Is the pre-implemented grading system that allows for equal opportunity for success. This gives all individuals the opportunity to get better and improve confidence and motivation.

STAD focuses on concepts and skills through: -Instruction: is where the teacher introduces the lesson and develops understanding of the lessons skills while allowing students to practice in a whole group setting. -Transitions to Teams: is where the whole group is split into preorganized smaller groups that allows the students to work together with individuals with different abilities and backgrounds giving new perspective on the skills to be learned. -Team study: is where the students actually begin practicing with the academic skills that have been being discussed and promote social development. -Recognizing Achievement: is where the improvement points and team rewards are given, which allows for an increase in motivation to learn.

STAD assessment takes place in two different formats: -Understanding of Content: is the summative types of assessment through written examination such as quizzes whether they are solve the problem or multiple-choice. -Assessing Group Processes: is the formative type of assessment in which the teacher monitors the effectiveness of the students communication, and respect of one another. -In this model teams earn Improvement Points: these are points earned from doing the right things that can be spent on a motivational reward such as a movie, or ability to purchase an item.

This strategy, when implemented correctly, has the ability to help motivate students through socialization with peers, students are able to see and know the reasoning for the grades they have received and know how to improve.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

Cooperative learning, when correctly implemented and structured, can improve communication, interpersonal skills, students attitude toward their coursework, problem-solving abilities, and general achievement.
