Lets take a closer look at..

The Sun
The sun is located in the center of the Solar System and takes up the most mass. The sun creates huge amounts of energy and is a vital energy source on Earth. The light from the sun can reach the earth in about eight minutes!

Mercury
Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, but is still millions of miles away. Mercury orbits the sun faster than Earth. There are no moons that orbit Mercury.

Venus
The planet Venus is a little bit smaller than Earth. Venus is surrounded by clouds that trap heat from the sun. Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System.

Earth
The only planet in our Solar System that has liquid on the surface and life. It takes planet Earth 24 hours to fully orbit. The tilt of the Earth as it orbits presents us life forms with seasons.

Earths Moon
Earths moon is the 5th largest moon in our Solar System. The moon orbits Earth and is its only natural satellite. The moon is very hot during the day, and very cold at night.

Mars
Mars is called the Red Planet due to its rust like color. There are MASSIVE volcanoes on Mars. It is possible that there may have once been water on Mars because of its apparent channels.

Jupiter
Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System. Jupiter has a very strong magnetic field and many moons. Poisonous gases surround Jupiter.

Saturn
Saturn is the second largest planet in our Solar System. Saturn is surrounded by a system of rings made of ice crystals. Saturn also has many moons.

Uranus
Uranus was actually the first planet discovered with a telescope. Uranus orbits on its side. Clouds of thick methane gas hide the planet from view.

Neptune
Out of all the planets in our Solar System, Neptune has the WORST weather. Neptune is a water planet. There are faint rings around Neptune.

Lets review what we have learned so far

.

You have now learned some basic facts about our solar system, but wait..

Our mission is to learn more about the Solar System. As space explorers, we will research and answer questions about the Solar System. We will have to dig deep into the virtual atmosphere, better known as the computer in the Lab, to learn all we can about our Solar System. Our Quest will take us far into the world of technology as we uncover important information about the Planets of the Solar System, the Sun and Earths Moon. Good luck space cadets and safe travels!
After I hand out our Quests worksheets, we will head to the Computer Lab.
