Visual Argument and Analysis

What am I doing?

RHET 1312.14/18

For this project, you will create a visual argument in the form of an asset map. Asset mapping, drawing a map of what is valuable in our communities, is an exercise in community development. Instead of focusing on deficiencies in communities, you will focus on strengths. Your task is to find something (an asset) in your local community that can be expanded or revitalized to better fit the community. You will create a digital map using either online mapping tools or by scanning your hand drawn creation of a map. For hand drawn copies you may use color pencils, markers etc. as long as your work is professional and appropriate. Only electronic copies will be accepted. In addition to this visual argument, you will construct a 3-4 page reflective argument defending your mapping choices and further supporting your visual argument. Other requirements of this project include the following: Map should include key, color, and be completed. Argument should be 3-4 pages typed, double-spaced, with 1 margins in MLA or APA format. Visual must be included as an appendix along with a works cited page. Appendices are not considered in page count. Post peer revisions of your peers work. Write a 1-2 page response to your peer and conference feedback. Construct an error-blog addressing grammatical/mechanical errors present in your work. Write an in-class reflection on your experience constructing this project.

What goals should I have accomplished by the end of this project? By the end of this assignment, you should be able to do the following: Use conventions of format and structure appropriate to the rhetorical situation Understand how genres shape reading and writing Understand the relationships among language, knowledge, and power Integrate your own ideas with those of others Develop flexible strategies for generating, revising, editing, and proof-reading Be aware that it usually takes multiple drafts to create and complete a successful text Use a variety of technologies to address a range of audiences Locate, evaluate, organize, and use research material collected from electronic sources, including scholarly library databases; other official databases (e.g., federal government databases); and informal electronic networks and internet sources Understand and exploit the differences in the rhetorical strategies and in the affordances available for both print and electronic composing processes and texts
