Classroom Management Cues

Classroom management in a music class can easily incorporate verbal and non-verbal cues. These cues will help define structure and expectation for your students. To establish these cues it takes practice with the students and clear expectations.

Non-Verbal Cues
Clapping rhythms to get attention Body Rhythms to have the students mimic and get back on task Gesture to stand o Can be used during concerts and in rehearsals Give me Five Hand goes up and waits for silence Use of musical instrument o When you make noise on the instrument the students know to stop what they are doing and listen Proximity o This helps with those individual students not on task Eye contact and facial expression can say a lot more than your voice o These can be used for praising students and also warning students about their behavior.

Verbal Cues
Attention grabber sayings or songs to get students on task o Teacher: Ba Da Ba Ba Ba Student: Im Lovin It! o Vocalizations that the students repeat back to you CHAMPS Levels o Level 0: means silence o Level 1: Whisper voice o Level 2: Normal talking voice
