CHAVANT Y2KLAY
Y2Klay is lightweight being 40% lighter with 75% increased volume, and has a SG of 0.95. It is sulphur free and is workable at 51C, meaning faster heating and a more comfortable working range. Many mould types including MDM, polyester, epoxy, urethane and silicone can be produced from the clay surface. Y2Klay is great for machining and displays no structural or surface cracking as a result of its good stability. 1.3kg
CHAVANT NSP
A professional grade sulphur free sculpting clay. NSP contains a higher percentage of waxes making it somewhat tougher than other similar products. NSP has good adhesive qualities, flexibility and length. NSP accepts cut detail lines cleanly. The surface texture may seem somewhat grabby as it contains no sulphur. NSP is firmer as compared to other products. Grades Available: Hard & Medium Colour: Brown & Green Size: 900g
The most popular new oil based clay available. A softer type of plasticene clay with the advantage of not inhibiting the cure of flexible moulding compounds, allowing the set up of the entire Barnes silicone range. SOFT, REGULAR, FIRM & EXTRA FIRM grades available.
SUPER SCULPEY
Super Sculpey is a ceramic like sculpting compound that is shatter and chip resistant. It remains soft and pliable if stored in a cool place and can be baked to a varying degree of hardness in conventional ovens. It becomes hard for easier painting and / or glazing and can be carved, sanded and drilled. Sculpey is a sulphur free product. Suitable for Barnes silicone rubber products. Flesh tone.
The most popular polymer clay, super sculpey, now comes in a colourful version that remains rubbery and flexible after baking. SuperFlex is a non-toxic compound that will not dry out when exposed to air. It stays soft and pliable until baked in a regular oven. Once cooled it is bendable, flexible and virtually indestructible. SuperFlex is perfect for all kids creations and adults will love it for its incredible durability and range of craft uses. This 8 colour pack includes colour step by step instructions and a sculpting tool. 8 colour pack: White, Black, Blue, Yellow, Flesh, Green, Orange, Red.

PRESSURE Generally using 50-70psi works best when using pressure without utilising vacuum first. It is important to add pressure gradually when using silicone moulds. Putting the pressure on too fast will very often distort the mould. When using pressure it is important to take temperature into consideration. The temperature in most pressure tanks is less than 25C and will often cause the material to cure slowly or to inhibit a through cure, especially if cast in a thin section. We try to recommend that the client utilise a heater band on the pressure vessel when possible. CURING The flexible water clear products can be cured with elevated heat for a faster demould times. However, heat curing has proved to compromise the finished physical properties mainly tear strength and elongation. Slightly elevated temperatures (26-30C) will assist in giving thin section a kick for curing but any addition temperature would be detrimental to the finished properties. POLISHING Everyone has their own method and what works for one person doesnt always work for another... This is what works for BJB Enterprises: Wet sand the part with 600, 1500, then 2000 grit wet/dry paper. Buff the part with Schlegel #1 buffing pad and 3M Perfect-it rubbing compound #05973 Finish with Schlegel #2 pad and 3M Perfect-it foam polishing glaze #05996 TROUBLE SHOOTING TIPS Surface is Tacky: Did the part see adequate amount of time in the mould? Was a tin based silicone mould used? Were thin walls (3mm or less) given a heat boost? Part is Foggy: Was it cast cold (under 25C)? Was a suspicious release agent utilised? Was another material cast into the mould before the WC? Shrinkage: Was the part cast in a two-part mould with risers? Was part mass cast without risers? > Optimal results occur when the material is processed and postcured as stated on the technical data sheet, especially when the cast is done in a thin wall section. > Casts done 3mm or less will require slight temperature increase to promote internal exotherm. > Clear casts that come from a mould looking cloudy or hazy have most likely been cast at a lower than ambient temperature (25C), have been cast in a mould that has not finished curing, or has been used with a release that would cause the cloudiness. Determine temperature of materials with a thermometer, not the thermostat for your room! > Shrinkage will occur with large cast parts, even when utilising the longer work life materials in thicker masses. Closed moulds with feed gates are highly recommended in these applications. > The WC series of polyurethanes can all be tinted to translucent colours or pigmented for opacity.
Product Catalogue 27
Part Shatters from Mould: Was the mould cold when the part was cast? Was the material preconditioned (warmed)? Was the part left in for full-recommended time before demoulding?
To achieve the best finish possible on water clear urethanes, a post-cure is required regardless of the part size. Follow the instructions provided on the data sheets for post-curing operations. The surface condition or your part will dictate where you are to begin finishing and will determine the grit of sandpaper required. To finish/polish a machined part (milled, saw cut or lathe turned finish), begin with the finest grit sandpaper possible to produce a flat surface free of tool lines or steps. 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper will provide a good place to start. Utilise a hard, flat acrylic or hardwood block. Rubber blocks or your hand may cause unevenness and will provide a wavy surface on the final polish. Take extra care to maintain an even surface if you are working with a curved or rounded part, and are hand sanding. Soak sandpaper in water for 1 to 2 hours prior to sanding to soften. Add a small amount of detergent to a spray bottle or bucket with water to lubricate while sanding (keep the surface wet). This mixture will avoid loading the sandpaper. Begin sanding in one direction only until surface is flat and uniform in appearance without noticeable tooling step lines or defects. If you find the defects are too deep and are difficult to remove, you should switch to a heavier grit sandpaper and proceed until they are completely removed. Continue sanding with finer grits, i.e. 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000. If you have obtained a flaw-free surface early on, these steps will go quickly. Rotate 90 degrees each time you change grits. Continue to sand across the last completed grit area. This step will assist you in perceiving the previous lines, and
when they are gone you may move to the next grit. When you reach the 2000 grit paper, you should be able to note a slight shine to the surface. This will help you determine whether you have removed all flaws. If so, proceed with the polishing steps. High-speed buffers tend to work well on metals but will burn plastics quickly. Lower speeds perform better, and the heat build-up can be controlled. Finishing with a foam buff pad tends to provide better results than with the use of traditional wool or cotton. 3M products have proven excellent for polishing urethane. Start with Finesse It compound in a cup. Apply a light film onto the part with a brush. Do not allow the surface to dry out for long while buffing. Continue to re-apply the compound. Monitor the surface temperature warm is good, hot is not. This step will provide a high shine on the part. In some instances, this may be enough of a finish for your part. For a higher sheen, utilise a new buff using 3Ms imperial Hand Glaze in the same manner as the Finesse It. Though not intended as a machine compound, on the clear urethane product, it works beautifully. Then spray the part with Brillianize (an anti-static polish/spray available where acrylic products are sold). Hand buff with a polishing cloth or a very soft flannel towel. Avoid terry cloth because it may scratch.

DUROMETER
A durometer is the device used for measuring the hardness of plastics, synthetics and natural rubber materials. The Shore A scale is most commonly used as a measurement for the more rubber-like materials, including most silicone RTV materials. (Silicone rubbers generally run between 20 and 60 on the Shore A scale.) The Shore D scale will measure harder elastomeric products. Both scales measure hardness on a table from 0 to 100. The higher the measured value, the harder the material. Ratings are always qualified to plus or minus 5 points due to variations of test results from operator to operator.
