Franklin 1 Caleb Franklin Professor Alicia Bolton English 101 11/5/13 Annotated Bibliography In the story The Peppermint

Twist, a series of events involving a mislabeled bottle of industrial corrosive soap and a supposedly inattentive bar staff cause an accident in which two customers are poisoned, resulting in permanent esophageal scarring. To the unobservant, unsuspicious reader this may appear to be a random series of events with no one specific to blame, but to the keen reader who is able to see the underlying causes behind this devastating events, this is more than a simple accident. According to the story, the company that makes the soap, Eko-Klene, failed to provide a warning label of the soaps corrosive nature, and also didnt provide a proper orientation as to the usage of the soap. However, the story also later states that incidents involving flesh burns and this particular soap have happened multiple times before, and that the company has still refused to label their soap as corrosive, and the orientation is still not adequate. In addition to this, not a single bar staffer took the time to read the bottle or its manual, nor did they buy new soap after the one incident in which they were forced to use Eko-Klene outside of its intended apparatus, which was the industrial dishwasher in the back. These coincidences and scenarios are simply too good to be accidents. I believe that this incident was not an accident, but rather a failed government assassination attempt.

Bhalla, A. Mahi, S. Sharma, N., Suri, V., Varma, S. Detergents-uncommon household poisons Indian Journal of Medical Sciences. 2009: 1. AcademicOneFile. Web. 29 October 2013.

Franklin 2 This article describes a doctors report of the condition of a 21-year-old man who had accidentally ingested 150 to 200 mL of detergent. The article goes on to describe a number of facts about accidental poisonings around the household. The article states that while anionic and nonionic detergents are nontoxic, cationic detergents are highly acidic, and produce dangerous corrosive effects. The route of injury reported is most often oral ingestion of detergents in a concentrated dose, and often cause severe damage to the gastrointestinal, respiratory and corneal mucosa, as well as developing a number of stomach ulcers and other effects depending on the route of ingestion. This article is credible due to the multiple collaborations of doctors that most likely discussed and evaluated the authenticity and precision of the report. The article is also cited from a reputable medical journal, and gets a majority of its facts form the American Association of Poison Control Centers, a highly reputable organization. This article serves to provide scientific background to the different types of detergent injuries, and their cause. It also serves the purpose of showing that detergent ingestion injuries are exceedingly more common than most people realize, especially when dealing with cationic detergent. This abundant number of injuries reinforces my point that this assassination attempt would have been more likely to have appeared as an accident had it succeeded in killing the two victims, as the commonness of this type of incident would have masked the deception. This low-key method of assassination would have grabbed much less attention than other, flashier murders, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr. Specifically there is a line that details the amount of common poisonings around the world that take place in the household that helps to support this claim: The American Association of Poison Control Centers reported that 92% of all toxic exposures occurred at home.

This excerpt from The Encyclopedia of Conspiracies and Conspiracy Theories details the assassination of former president John F. Kennedy, and gives a detailed report of the possible conspiracies behind the murder and the actual events of the murder. It tells of the constant debate over the years as to whether or not there was one gunman or a conspiracy of killers. It describes that there were a number of wounds in Kennedys body that dont make sense according to the trajectory of the bullet, and also that Oswalds gun was tested, and couldnt have fired three shots in the time span allotted. This excerpt is reliable, as it comes from a reputable encyclopedia, which gets its information from professional doctors and analysts, as well as other works and anthologies. The excerpt has a number of credible analyses and theories on the subject of the assassination as well. This excerpt serves the purpose of proposing a similar situation in which the government may or may not have had a hand in an assassination, as the theorists suggest there may have been another gunman, and the government ignored a large amount of credible evidence that there may have been a second assassin besides Oswald. Supposedly the government rewrote history, and medical reports were altered or lost. The excerpt also serves the purpose of supporting my point that the government may have chosen a low-key method for attempting to murder Cindia Cott and her father, as this assassination gained a huge amount of media attention, and could have caused a national uproar had the government been found to be involved.

O Reilly, Bill. Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 2011. Print.

This book details the days leading up to and after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the details of the plot to kill him by the conspirators led by the actor John Wilkes Booth. It tells of Lincolns

Franklin 4 efforts to stop the war, Booths plots to kill him, and the drastic events after his death and the nationwide search for Booth. It also tells of the conspirators plots to avenge the south and kill the vice president, Andrew Johnson. This book is credible as it has been thoroughly analyzed and researched by Bill OReilly, who is a very reputable and intelligent newscaster and politician. He has studied American politics for a number of years, and took the time to analyze this story on his own and research the findings on the assassination. The book also has a number of historical entries and articles dating back to before the Civil War. This story is going to serve as support for the point that ordinary U.S. citizens are fully capable of conspiring against the government, and that the victims of the assassination attempt could have been conspirators that were pre-emptively stopped. After the tragedy of the loss of Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy, national security for The President has increased drastically, and it is entirely possible that the government tried to take out Cindia Cott and her father before they were able to assassinate an important political figure or worse. There were a number of civilian plots against Lincolns life, and many people knew about them, even some in law enforcement: Like everyone else in the city, Westfall is well aware that there are plots against Lincolns life. Some say its not matter of time but when the president will die.

"Poison!" Films On Demand. Films Media Group, 2002. Web. 4 Nov. 2013

This film depicts a number of deadly poisons found in nature and antidotes for them or that they are used to make. It describes a number of different animals that can use these toxins, how they are administered to the host, and also some depictions of poison in warfare. It tells of how, at one

Franklin 5 point, Iraqi soldiers created missiles filled with a certain form of bacterial poison which could have easily wiped out the entire population. This film is credible and trustworthy due to its background as a National Geographic film. National Geographic is highly reputable for its precise information and accurate documentaries. This indicates that the information was most likely highly researched and checked for accuracy before the film was released. This film serves the purpose of proposing the counterargument. The counterargument states that the main reason that this may not have been an assassination attempt by the government is that with so many deadly poisons at its disposal that have already been proven to be effective killers in times of war, why would the government resort to using corrosive detergent instead of a direct poison on Cindia Cott and her father. This counterargument is later proven to be invalid, as the government chose to use detergent because of the relative commonness of detergent poisoning, and because poisons and chemical agents used in warfare would have been an immediate red flag to any mortician or doctor that detected it in the body of the victims. Particularly supportive to the counterargument is when the film states the information about the discovery by United Nations of the poison filled missiles of the Iraqi forces that could have killed the entire population had they been used: After the Gulf War, United Nations discovered that the Iraqis had armed missiles and bombs with Botulinum toxin. A single gram can kill more than a million people. The Iraqis had brewed enough to eradicate the worlds population three times over.

Ryan, Jason. License to Kill? Intelligence Chief Says U.S. Can Take Out American Terrorists. AbcNews.com. 3 Feb 2010. Web. 4 November 2013.

Franklin 6 This story details a report by the U.S. Chief of Intelligence stating that American citizens suspected of being terrorists can be added to an assassination target list. If the American citizen is involved in a group that threatens to attack America, and whether they are a threat to other Americans are the main reasons for being put on the list. The story goes on to depict several examples of American citizens suspected or confirmed of being terrorists were taken out by assassination or by missile strikes. This article is credible as it comes from ABC News, which is generally a pretty reliable news network. They often do their research before putting the story on television, though they occasionally stretch the truth like any news channel does. The other of this website story however has had ample time to complete his research and ensure that his information is precise. This story is extremely helpful in supporting my point as to why the government would choose to try and kill two supposedly ordinary U.S. citizens. Though there is no proof that Cindia Cott and her father were suspected terrorists, this provides the reader with the information that it is within the scope of the governments authority to assassinate these people should it choose to do so. At one point, the Intelligence Chief explains the types of actions that will get an American placed on the assassination list: Whether that American is involved in a group that is trying to attack, whether that American hasis a threat to other Americans. Those are the factors involved.
