Entrepreneurship
An Evidence-based Guide
Robert A. Baron, Oklahoma State University, US
An ideal text for undergraduate and MBA entrepreneurship courses in business, engineering and the social sciences. Entrepreneurship is ideal for use as a classroom textbook or as a primer for non-specialist general readers with an interest in entrepreneurship. The Midwest Book Review Entrepreneurship is indeed a driving force of economic growth. But beyond that, it is also a key mechanism through which human creativity, ingenuity, skill, and energy are converted into tangible outcomes that can, and often do, change the world in ways that enhance and enrich human welfare. This volume will be of particular interest to students of entrepreneurship in a broad array of fields ranging from business and management to engineering and governance. Suitable for undergraduate courses and graduate programs alike, this book is frontier blazing in its own right and will help those who read it be so as well. 2012 240 pp Hardback 978 1 78100 037 3 75.00 2012 Paperback 978 1 78100 039 7 25.00 Elgaronline 978 1 78100 038 0

A creative, accessible textbook for both undergraduate students and would-be entrepreneurs. The strength of this book is: It is pitched at a level suitable for students. . . who just want to go out and found their own businesses (or think that they do); it is written in a very friendly, supportive, non-intimidating style in which the authors empathise with the student indeed, empathy is an interesting subtheme of some of the things they suggest about the successful entrepreneur. Mark Casson, University of Reading, UK Each chapter kicks off with a real-life international case story by high-profile entrepreneurship scholars, including William B. Gartner, Saras Sarasvathy, Alain Fayolle, Kevin Hindle, Thomas Cooney, Anita Van Gils and Ann Clarke. Theories of entrepreneurship are embedded with tensions and dilemmas, which this book presents as a collection of paradoxes for each theme and chapter. The book challenges the reader to be critical and to take a stand on the many paradoxical situations entrepreneurs encounter on their entrepreneurial journey. New Perspectives on Firm Growth

NEW

Edited by Per Davidsson, Queensland University of Technology, Australia and the Jnkping International Business School, Sweden and Johan Wiklund, Syracuse University, US and Jnkping International Business School, Sweden
This new volume presents a collection of cutting-edge works by two of the leading researchers of firm growth. The studies extend previous research by providing stronger theoretical underpinnings and using longitudinal databases that can separate in time the firms growth from its presumed causes. They also break new ground by examining different modes of growth, such as sales growth vs. employment growth, and organic growth vs. acquisition-based expansion. Further, the studies do not only investigate the drivers of firm growth but also take a critical look at its effect, such as under what circumstances high growth is associated with high profitability. Tools for Making the Possible Real

NEW

Robert A. Baron, Oklahoma State University, US

The field of entrepreneurship has long pondered the following question: Why, despite their high levels of motivation, effort, and commitment, do so many entrepreneurs fail? Robert Baron suggests that although part of the answer involves external factors beyond entrepreneurs control, the surprisingly high rates of failure among entrepreneurs derive, primarily, from factors relating to the entrepreneurs themselves. Many fail, he proposes, because they are lacking in various tools essential for success, including skills, knowledge, and personal resources crucial for the task of converting ideas into reality. These tools are identified, and means for acquiring or strengthening them are described. May 2013 c 180 pp Hardback 978 1 78195 208 5 c 65.00 Elgaronline 978 1 78195 209 2

A complex mix of attitudes, traits, motives, skills, capabilities, styles and mental mindsets contributes to entrepreneurial leadership. The current volume brings together perspectives from leading scholars in the entrepreneurship and management disciplines that inform our understanding of the nature of, requirements for, and implications resulting from entrepreneurial leadership.
53 articles, dating from 1996 to 2012 Contributors include: M. Cardon, A. Corbett, J. Covin, K. Eisenhardt, R. Duane Ireland, M. Hitt, E. Locke, R. McGrath, J. McMullen, S. Sarasvathy, D. Shepherd

Robert Hisrich, Thunderbird School of Global Management, US and Amr Al-Dabbagh, Al-Dabbagh Group, Saudi Arabia With a foreword by Bill Clinton
I cant think of a more qualified scholar to tackle the difficult subject of governpreneurship than Bob Hisrich. His vast experience in, and knowledge of, entrepreneurship has enabled a thorough application of entrepreneurial principles to government organizations. This book should be recommended reading for everyone in government at every level. We can only hope that a new era of governpreneurship is launched with this useful and practical guide. Thomas N. Duening, University of Colorado, US Challenging the traditional view that entrepreneurship is exclusively a private-sector concern, Governpreneurship presents a compelling argument for increased focus on entrepreneurship in public sector organizations. The only book to date to focus specifically on government entrepreneurship, this innovative volume offers expert advice on fostering and managing entrepreneurship in the public sector. Featuring forewords by former US President Bill Clinton and Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, as well as four case studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of government entrepreneurship in action, this fascinating book breaks new ground in a rapidly growing field. The Competitive Dynamics of Entrepreneurial Market Entry

Edited by Gideon D. Markman, Colorado State University and Phillip H. Phan, Johns Hopkins University, US
Research on general market entry usually focuses on large enterprises. Often, however, small entrants can alter the competitive dynamics of an industry. This volume brings together the most prominent thought leaders and the best research on the asymmetric entrant-incumbent dynamics. The ideas presented offer a more nuanced perspective on how, when, where and with what consequences small, single-product firms enter markets that are dominated by large, multiproduct and multimarket incumbents. 2011 552 pp Hardback 978 1 84980 271 0 125.00 Elgaronline 978 0 85793 641 7

Edited by Charlie Karlsson, Jnkping International Business School, Jnkping University, Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden and European Regional Science Association, Brje Johansson, Jnkping International Business School, Jnkping University and Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden and Roger R. Stough, George Mason University, US
This book highlights the role of entrepreneurship, social capital and governance for regional economic development. In recent decades, many researchers have claimed that entrepreneurship is the most critical factor in sustaining regional economic growth. However, most entrepreneurship research is undertaken without considering the fundamental importance of the regional context. Other research has emphasized the role of social capital but there are substantial problems in empirically relating measures of social capital to regional economic development. A Globalizing Industry
Edited by Hans Landstrm, Lund University, Sweden and Colin Mason, University of Strathclyde, UK
The second edition of the Handbook of Research on Venture Capital provides an important guidepost for venture capital researchers. As Landstrm and Mason point out, the nature of venture capital has changed dramatically over the last ten years. The asset class as a whole has failed to return principal and the old model is under tremendous strain. The contributors nicely highlight many of these changes, especially how venture capital has scaled beyond the US. For those of us active in venture capital research, the chapters raise many interesting research questions that deserve further attention. Andrew Zacharakis, Babson College, US

Handbook of Research on New Venture Creation

Edited by Kevin Hindle, Deakin University, Australia and Kim Klyver, University of Southern Denmark
This comprehensive Handbook provides an essential analysis of new venture creation research. The eminent contributors critically discuss and explore the current literature as well as suggest improvements to the field. They reveal a strong sense of both the state-of-the-art (what has and has not been done in new venture creation research) and the state-of-the-could-be (future directions the field should take to improve knowledge). The Handbook comprises nineteen chapters divided into four main sections: setting the agenda; theoretical perspectives; data and measurements; and new venture creation through contextual lenses.

An Annotated Bibliography
Alfredo De Massis, University of Bergamo, Italy, Pramodita Sharma, University of Vermont and Babson College, US, Jess H. Chua, University of Calgary, Canada and Zhejiang University, China and James J. Chrisman, Mississippi State University, US and University of Alberta, Canada
If I had been asked to suggest the currently most-needed editorial endeavor for advancing family business studies, I would have answered with no hesitation: an up-to-date annotated bibliography. The fields growth over the past 15 years has been so intense, that even experts who devote most of their research efforts to family business not to mention younger scholars approaching the field will significantly benefit from De Massis, Sharma, Chrisman and Chuas indispensable work. Entrepreneurship NEW Across Generations

Narrative, Gender and Learning in Family Business

Eleanor Hamilton, Lancaster University Management School, UK
Entrepreneurship Across Generations examines dimensions of identity, gender and learning to understand the complex fabric of family business. An interpretation of narratives from two generations in five families constitutes entrepreneurship as an inherently social, rather than individual, phenomenon. This book explains how entrepreneurial capacity is shared between generations, showing learning embedded within everyday social practice in the family and the business. It explores patriarchal practice and gendered entrepreneurial identities in family business. Eleanor Hamilton challenges dominant discourses of entrepreneurship. She argues that entrepreneurial identities are mediated by narrative and subject to constant negotiation within and across generations. It also contains the unique feature of examining the ways in which entrepreneurs themselves shape institutions.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Evolving Economies

The Role of Law
Edited by Megan M. Carpenter, Texas Wesleyan School of Law, US
Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Evolving Economies examines the role of law in supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in communities whose economies are in transition. It contains a collection of works from different perspectives and tackles tough questions regarding policy and practice, including how support for entrepreneurship can be translated into policy. The Shift to the Entrepreneurial Society

A Built Economy in Education, Sustainability and Regulation
Edited by Jean Bonnet, University of Caen, France, Marcus Dejardin, University of Namur and Universit catholique de Louvain, Belgium and Antonia Madrid-Guijarro, Universidad Politcnica de Cartagena, Spain
The concept of the entrepreneurial economy stems from the widespread belief that entrepreneurship is perhaps the most important and scarcest input factor of modern highly developed economies. This has resulted in a multitude of studies on the drivers and consequences of entrepreneurship in its many manifestations. Less is known about how entrepreneurship interlinks with modern institutions and policy aims such as education, finance, regulation, and the struggle with crises. The present volume fills this gap in our understanding of the entrepreneurial economy. It shows that the concept of the entrepreneurial economy is so broad that entrepreneurial society is the better term. Roy Thurik, Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Technological Entrepreneurship in China

How Does it Work?
Edited by Claudio Petti, University of Salento, Italy
This unique book offers a series of case studies about how technology creation has evolved in China. This is an in-depth perspective about the trajectory and the entrepreneurial transformations of some successful high-tech Chinese companies in different industries. The book pictures as well the roles played by government, universities and companies in fostering regional systems of innovation in different parts of China. Written by Chinese and foreign experts, those views are not partial; authors reveal an untruncated and thorough analysis. Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Second Tier Regions

Heike Mayer, University of Bern, Switzerland
Second tier high-tech regions are taking a different path than their well-known counterparts such as Silicon Valley or Route 128 around Boston. They may lack many prerequisites of growth such as a world-class research university or high levels of venture capital funding. Often, however, they can successfully leverage anchor firms and entrepreneurial spinoffs. This book explores the evolution of these regions in the United States. 2011 272 pp Hardback 978 1 84720 359 5 70.00 Elgaronline 978 0 85793 869 5

Edited by Maureen McKelvey, University of Gothenburg, Sweden and Astrid Heidemann Lassen, Aalborg University, Denmark
Case studies can be used as a key element in learning and understanding what really occurs, as well as for illustrating theoretical points. This book provides a series of in-depth case studies of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship from different industries to elucidate relevant phenomena and topics. Global Entrepreneurship NEW and Development Index 2013

Zoltn J. cs, George Mason University, US, Lszl Szerb, University of Pcs, Hungary and Erkko Autio, London Business School, UK
Acclaim for the 2011 edition: The Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index . . . focuses on high-growth companies. It tries to measure the ambition of entrepreneurs as well as the prevalence of start-ups. It presents its results in ways that are designed to capture the attention of policymakers. It produces a ranking of 71 countries (for all their faults, nothing makes a politician jump like a league table). It also identifies bottlenecks that prevent countries from doing better. The index concludes that development and enterprise are correlated. The Economist The Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index both captures the context features of entrepreneurship and fills a gap in the measurement of development. Cross-Border NEW Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in Europes Border Regions

Edited by David Smallbone, Kingston University, UK, Friederike Welter, Jnkping International Business School, Sweden and Mirela Xheneti, University of Sussex, UK
This volume is concerned with entrepreneurship and economic development in Europes border regions, focusing on the effects of EU enlargement on these regions, both within the EU and in neighbouring countries. Particular attention is paid to cross border entrepreneurial activity. Cross border co-operation involving entrepreneurs is attracting increasing attention in Europe as EU enlargement has increased the length of its borders with the former Soviet republics. The expert contributors highlight that border regions tend to be economically disadvantaged as a result of their peripherality, which means cross-border co-operation for business purposes represents a potential development tool. This groundbreaking book contains an empirical evidence base drawn from regions in EU member states and the Newly Independent States, as well as providing a conceptual base for informed policy development. Edited by E. Kevin Kelloway, Saint Marys University, Canada and Cary L. Cooper CBE, Lancaster University, UK
The editors say that their book demonstrates a clear need for low cost, low tech, non-resource demanding OS&H interventions that could readily be deployed in a small business setting. Social Entrepreneurship in the Age of Atrocities

NEW

Changing Our World

Edited by Zachary D. Kaufman, George Washington University, US

Most social ventures cross the boundaries between the private, the public and the non-profit/voluntary sectors, and this broad involvement of actors and intertwining of sectors makes the label societal entrepreneurship more appropriate. Stating the importance of both the local and the broader societal context, the book reports close-up studies from a variety of social ventures. Generic themes include positioning societal entrepreneurship against other images of collective entrepreneurship, critically penetrating its assumptions and practices and proposing ways of promoting societal entrepreneurship more widely. RESEARCH COLLECTION

How can anyone make a difference in a world marked by genocide, civil war, refugee crises, disease epidemics? With conscience, hope, and sweat equity, Dr. Zachary Kaufman and the other contributors to this book have offered aid, created organizations serving victims of human rights violations, and learned from set-backs and failures. Their insight into challenges of sustainable fund-raising, organizational design and management, and skepticism about young Western volunteers can inspire and instruct others who hope to address suffering and injustice through initiative, analysis, and commitment. Social Entrepreneurship

NEW

Edited by Jill Kickul, New York University Stern School of Business, US, Sophie Bacq, Universit catholique de Louvain, Belgium, David Gras, Syracuse University and Mark Griffiths, University of Miami, US
It is over twenty years since the first research article on social entrepreneurship was published. The literature has reached the critical mass necessary for reflection and singling out of exemplar pieces, and the exponential growth in research interest in the field now merits identification of foundational and model papers to aid and guide future advancements. In creating this two-volume collection, the editors have successfully brought together the most important and influential social entrepreneurship articles to date. Topics covered include social entrepreneurship opportunities and creation, developing business models and organizational forms, social impact and contextual influences on social entrepreneurship. The collection, with an original introduction by the editors, will be of immense value to students, researchers and scholars interested in the field of social entrepreneurship.
82 articles, dating from 1987 to 2011 Contributors include: D. Bornstein, T. Dacin, G. Dees, H. Haugh, T. Lumpkin, J. Mair, T. Moss, A. Nicholls, A.M. Peredo, J. Robinson

Patterns NEW in Social Entrepreneurship Research

Edited by Jill Kickul, New York University Stern School of Business and Sophie Bacq, Northeastern University, US
This is an excellent collection of papers that makes a significant contribution to the academic literature on social entrepreneurship. As well as highlighting opportunities for research in this area, the book emphasizes three issues that are central to social entrepreneurship the role of leadership, the role of stakeholders, and the role of legitimacy about which relatively little has been written. It therefore constitutes an important resource for social entrepreneurship researchers. Handbook of Research Methods on Social Entrepreneurship

Edited by Richard Seymour, The University of Sydney Business School, Australia
Defining social entrepreneurship has in the past proved problematic, and debate continues concerning what it does and does not entail and encompass. This unique book frames the debates surrounding the phenomenon and argues that many of the difficulties relating to the study of social entrepreneurship are rooted in methodological issues. Highlighting these issues, the book sets out ideas and implications for researchers using alternative methodologies.

Understanding the NEW Entrepreneur as Socially Constructed

Robert Smith, Robert Gordon University, UK
This book adopts a socially constructed, Verstehen based approach to first deconstruct entrepreneur stories to understand how such narratives are socially constructed in western societies. The chapters address various elements which make up the subject matter of entrepreneur stories, looking at its philosophical, psychological and sociological building blocks and how these are rooted in deeply social issues such as demography, morality, religion, family, social class, ethnicity and gender. To Act as if and Make a Difference

Bjrn Bjerke and Mathias Karlsson, Linnaeus University, Sweden
Entrepreneurs are seen as people who aim to act as if and make a difference, that is, who act out of the ordinary and come up with noticeable solutions to various problems without being restricted by existing resources or possibilities. This informative book examines some of social entrepreneurs in practice in several countries whilst concentrating on entrepreneurs in the third sector. The authors call them entrepreneurial citizens. Such people are becoming more common but also more necessary in the world of today. Jan 2013 c 180 pp Hardback 978 1 78100 697 9 c 65.00 Elgaronline 978 1 78100 698 6
