Lesson Topic: Throwing/Catching, Open Space

# of Students: 30

Psychomotor: Students will be able to throw a football by stepping with the opposite foot, bringing the ball to their ear, and following though to the target. Students will catch a football by extending their arms to the football and accepting the pass into their body. Cognitive: Students will demonstrate knowledge of football strategies and tactics by finding and becoming open receivers during game play. Affective: Students will demonstrate teamwork and cooperation by working with partners and small groups to accomplish the goals at hand during game play.

Equipment: 30 + footballs (various types), 40 cones, 30+ flag belts, 10+ hula hoops
LESSON CONTENT & PROGRESSIONS Introduction, skills task analysis, activity, review Teaching Cues The cues are short quotes of what you are saying to students to remind them of proper form. MANAGERIAL STRATEGIES Organization of space, equipment, students (diagrams of practice formations, equipment set up, and game situations ), including method for assigning students to groups Safety Procedures Checking field, equipment, and facilities for debris, damage, etc. What safety procedures will you take to make sure ALL students are safe in your class.

Transition: When students enter the classroom, have them stand facing you on the line at center court.
Instant Activity King of the Hill Rachael 3 minutes 2 rounds

Before class, set up polyspots and have pinnies and hula hoops along the wall

Make sure that floor is clean and ready to be used by the students.

Good morning 5th grade! Today we are going to practice some skills the Nittany Lions use to play football! First, we are going to get warmed up with a game called King of the Hill. You will each have two flags/pinnies hung at your sides. The object of the game is to run around the basketball court trying to grab as many flags/pinnies as you can from your classmates without losing any of yours! Remember to travel safely and when I say go, grab two flags/pinnies from along the gymnasium wall and begin playing. Go! Transition: After the instant activity, have students place their flags/pinnies back along

the wall. Bring it in to the volleyball line perpendicular to the center court line for set induction and throwing/catching demonstration. Set Induction:Matt 1-2 minutes Great job with King of the Hill, can everyone feel their heart beating fast? Thats great, your muscles are now warmed up to start practicing our Penn State football skills! We will work on throwing like Christian Hackenberg, receiving like Allen Robinson, and finding open space like the entire Nittany Lion offense did against Purdue this weekend! Before we do that we want to make sure you are safe during this lesson so I want to go over a few safety protocols. The first is ball, ball, ball ; I want you to say this when the football is out of your reach and control so it doesnt injure anyone. The second is that we are not going to be intercepting any passes to maintain safety! Activity: Throwing and Receiving - Marcie 3-4 Minutes The first two skills we will work on are throwing and catching. May I please have a volunteer to help me demonstrate? Throwing: The first thing we need to cover is the proper grip. We will grip the football by holding the laces like this (make sure to show students the correct and incorrect way to hold the laces). Great, now you are ready to learn quarterback skills. When we throw the football we will step toward our receiver with the opposite foot, raise the football to our ear, and follow through (Alert your volunteer, and Opposite foot Make sure that students are spread out enough so that when throwing and catching they are not in danger of being hit by another groups ball.

throw/catch with them 3-4 times, verbally calling cues as you demonstrate). Now pick up your Make a target imaginary football, grip it across the laces, and throw some practice touchdowns. Pull to chest Receiving: Did you notice how I caught the football when ______ threw it to me? I extended my arms to make a target, and absorbed the ball into my body just like Robinson does when he catches a touchdown. Can everyone show me your target? Great job, now we are ready to practice with a real ball! When I say Go you will run to a polyspot. The person standing directly across from you will be your partner. Go! If you are standing on a polyspot on the baseline, grab a football from the bins and begin practicing with your partner. Transition: After throwing/catching, have students hold the footballs and bring it in to the center court line. As students are doing this, take 4 polyspots and set them up to form a square. Place a hula hoop in the square near the mid court. 8 total hoops and 16 poly spots should be used and color coordinated. Activity: Open Space Lauren 8 minutes Now that you have had time to practice throwing and catching, we need to work on getting open and finding open receivers! May I please have 5 volunteers to help me demonstrate? (Designate two students to be quarterback, one to be a receiver, and two to be defenders, the instructor will act as the second receiver.)

Remind students there is to be no physical contact made and enforce it!

Cut to get open Find general space Communicate

For this activity, the receivers must work on finding and moving to open space so the quarterback can throw them the ball from inside the hula hoop. The defenders will attempt to guard the receivers and knock the pass incomplete. If you are a defender you may not touch a receiver. (Demonstrate moving to open space and receive a pass. Show and clarify what constitutes being covered and what open space is.) If you are on offense, see how many times you can complete a pass. If you are on defense, see how many passes you can break up. When I say Go you will need to find a group of 6 and set up a square with 4 polyspots and a hula hoop. Go! Transition: Freeze the class when you want them to exchange roles. Quarterbacks move to receivers, receivers move to defenders, defenders move to quarterbacks. Make sure each students gets reps at each position. After the activity, have each group place their polyspots along the wall and put their footballs away. Bring it in to the volleyball line perpendicular to the center court line. Activity: Spaceball JJ and Rachael 20 minutes (including demo) You have done such a great job practicing football skills that we are going to play a game! The object of this game is to score as many points as possible. On offense you can score a point by completing a pass, and on defense you can score a point by knocking down or intercepting a pass. Remember what you have practiced! (Check for understanding by reviewing cues to throwing/catching and moving to open space.)

No contact!

= polyspot

= hula hoop

The quarterbacks will be in the middle of the gym so they are throwing towards the wall to increase safety.

Teams 3 & 4

Make sure that students are leaving the receiver their own self space and no physical contact is present.

Make sure that students are using appropriate force behind passes depending on the distance they have to throw. Teams 1 & 2

Game play: - There will be 2 quarterbacks in the corner on each team throwing to their receivers - The extra defenders are standing on a polyspot in front of the quarterbacks waving their hands in the air to try and distract the quarterback. - Offense gets to throw the ball 4 times then they will switch with the defense - If the defense breaks up or intercepts a pass, or if the offense does not complete a pass, the defense gets a point - Score as many points as you can as a team and keep track of the score Make the teams the same as the open space activity. (Demonstrate the game by dividing one group in half-offense and defense. The defense will grab pinnies from along the wall. Have students select a buddy on their team. When alternating between quarterback and receiver on offense, you will rotate with your partner. Play out one to two points, then allow that group to keep playing as you help organize the second groups game.) Transition: After the game, have each student grab 2 pieces of equipment and put it away where it belongs. Bring it in to the center court line. Closure: Matt 1-2 Minutes Today we covered 3 skills the Penn State football team uses to win big games. Throwing,

Find open space Lead your receiver Eyes on receiver Locate ball Communicate Make sure that students are being mindful of others running around and are not colliding with other students. Have two demos going on each side so it is easier for the students to learn the game and begin playing.

catching, and moving to open space. Can anyone show and tell me how we threw/caught? What was one strategy that helped your team on offense during Space Ball? Everyone did a great job today, I hope you had a lot of fun and will keep practicing your skills! Dont forget to watch the football team in action this weekend!

Reflection: When we first taught this lesson, we had the partner passing that was two rows and set up across the gym that students were in danger of getting hit with footballs in the back of the head. The second time we taught it, we set up the students across the length of the gym so they were no longer in any danger and we could walk around easier to give feedback. When we did the open space activity the first time, we only had one quarterback per group, which reduced the amount of activity time for the students. The second time we taught it, we had two quarterbacks per group, so that in each group there was two quarterbacks, two receivers, and two defenders which worked out much better and had the students more active. For the game play the first time we kept it with one quarterback per team, and then the second time we taught it we added a second quarterback which kept the students on task more. The second time we taught it was much more successful by gibing the students more practice and play time. As teachers we each had a yellow pinnie tucked into our pants that we used as a flag if the defense was not playing safely, which helped the g ame run smoothly. I think the first time we taught it was pretty organized, but could have demonstrated the open space activity a bit better. It was a good idea to explain the game on both sides of the gym so the students could pay attention to the teacher better and the students were all demonstrating the game as the teachers were explaining. The first time I taught the instant activity and I think that went pretty well, and the second time we taught I explained the open space activity which I thought went pretty well, but I noticed that some students were behind my back when I was explaining.
