Margaret Armstrong Childs Name: Matthieu Dates of Observation: 10/29/13, 10/31/13 Content Area: Math CCSS: Counting, Cardinality,

and Operations Base Ten KR: Counting and Quantity Rate: Names and orders quantities Criteria: Uses numbers to compare, identifies the next number in a series of numbers, identifies first and last, gives the rest when asked, uses drawings to represent quantity and numbers, and counts a number of objects up to 10. Date: 10/31/13

On October 31st, Matthieu completed putting together a puzzle. As I sat next to him, I asked which piece he put in first, and he pointed to the correct piece. He also said he was saving the green puzzle piece to put in last. I asked if he could count the puzzle pieces, and he counted to eight, but then skipped nine and said ten.

CCSS: Operations and Algebraic Thinking KR: Computation Rate: Makes a set of objects smaller or larger Criteria: Matches objects and sets, makes a collection of items larger by adding when asked, makes collections of items smaller by taking items away when asked, identifies one more and one less, and describes addition and subtraction situations for numbers less than 3. Date: 10/31/13

On October 31st, Matthieu connected five train cars. I asked how could you make the train longer?, and he added a train car. When I asked if would make the train smaller, he took one train car away. I put out two red train cars and two brown train cars and asked him to match them, and he paired the train cars by color.

CCSS: Measurement and Data KR: Location Rate: Communicates with location words Criteria: Follows directions involving location, uses beside or next to, answers where is questions, and asks where is questions. Date: 10/31/13

On October 31st, after Matthieu had finished playing with the train, I asked him to put the train cars away in the basket on the shelf. When I asked him where are the train tracks, he said, Right here! Next to the blocks.

CCSS: Measurement and Data KR: Length, Capacity, Weight, Temperature Rate: Differentiates gradients of size and weight Criteria: Distinguishes between big and little, hot and cold; orders 3 objects by size, assembles a set of nesting objects, recognizes which object is lighter/heavier, recognizes which object is warmer/cooler, recognizes which object can hold more, and recognizes which object is shorter, longer or taller. Date: 10/29/13

On October 29, Matthieu matched a picture of himself next to a picture of his house. I asked him if the picture of himself or of his house was bigger. He responded, My house! I then asked if in real life himself or his house was littler, and he said, Me! I later asked Matthieu if it was warmer inside the classroom, or outside on the playground. He responded that it was warmer inside.

CCSS: Geometry KR: Sorting and Classifying Objects Rate: Matches opposites Criteria: Matches same attributes, puts together pairs of pictures of opposites, names the opposite of a given quality, and identifies objects that do not belong to a particular group. Date: 10/31/13

On October 31st, Matthieu matched objects with their imprints in clay pieces. He matched these items based of their similar attributes, such as shape, size, and texture. For example, when I asked why he matched this red block with its clay piece, he said, its smooth triangle. Later that day, when we were playing with train cars, I got out three red cars and a brown car. When I asked which one did not belong, he pointed to the brown car.
