Lesson overview: This lesson is meant to be taught online, in either a synchronous or asynchronous classroom where students will have the opportunity to connect with each other using various online tools. Whereas in a typical face to face classroom, students would take part in this type of activity using a jigsaw or carousel strategy, it is the aim of this lesson to use online tools so students can interact at a distance. This lesson may be reworked to accommodate different instructional situations. !

It is recommended that if the facilitator of this activity is using discussion forums in a Learning Management system like Moodle, DL2, Edmodo, etc. that the content and the discussion threads are laid out ahead of time.! If the activity is to take place synchronously using software like Collaborate, it is recommended that the discussion take place either in breakout rooms or using an interactive whiteboard.! Rationale: Stereotyping can be harmful and is often overlooked as an issue. With this lesson it is hoped that students will examine stereotypes that are given to people and think critically about how damaging it can be to be identied by a stereotype. It is also hoped that by using interactive mediums, students will make connections and gain better understanding through connecting.!

Materials: 1. A slideshow that has the sequence of the lesson and instructions.! 2. For discussions: Access to an Learning Management system with discussion forum capabilities. Or, a form of networking such as Collaborate, Google Hangouts, Skype, etc.! 3. Content for the three discussion threads.! 4. Rubric Procedure 3. Students will navigate through the slideshow which will show pictures of people from various walks of life. 4. Then the slideshow will prompt the students to comment on each slide within the chosen medium for discussion. The question they will respond to is, What is the stereotype attached to this person? The student will then have to make their comments in the discussion medium. Synchronously, students will have to make responses to their peers in real time. Asynchronously, students will have to revisit the discussion at a later time and make comments on the posts of their peers. If discussion forums are being used, the rst thread will have to be set up under the name, Part One: Understanding Stereotypes. Students will be encourages to touch on how negative stereotypes are unfair and harmful.! Note: While students will be able to make comments that are negative in nature, they are encouraged to remain as respectful as possible in their language. 5. There will be a new prompt with a picture of a teenager in the slideshow. The picture will be of teenagers. The new statement students will have to respond to is, "Teenagers are stereotyped as ___ and ___ because_______. Once again student write out their responses and will respond to their peers and touch on how negative stereotypes are unfair. Synchronously, students will have to make responses to their peers in real time. Asynchronously, students will have to revisit the discussion at a later time and make comments on the posts of their peers! If discussion forums are being used, the rst thread will have to be set up under the name, Part Two: Understanding Teenager Stereotypes. Content for this thread is available in the Content for Discussion Forum attached to this lesson. 6. Students will then ll out their Ticket Out. The ticket out can be done in a wiki, a new thread or handed in to the instructor as a word processing le. In the ticket out students will be asked to reect on what they have learned and apply there learning. The statements responded to will be, " 1.I am ! ! I am not ! ! . " 2. What did I notice about my learning? " 3. How will I use what I have learned? Evaluation Students will be evaluated using a rubric that will look at the quality of participation, contributions and connections with peers.
