Objectives:
!Students will: Study Megan Coyles collage technique and respond to questions. Discuss why Coyles collages look like paintings. Focus on the role of color and texture in works of art. Create a small paper collage using the painting with paper technique. !

Materials:
! Paper Pencil Scissors Acid-free glue sticks Magazines Construction paper (assortment of colors)

Lesson:
!Class Period One 1) Have students read the brief biography of Megan Coyle and take a look at the collages from her online portfolio. 2) Have students respond to questions from the Student Activities: What is Painting with Paper, What is a Still Life, and Why is Color Important in Art? 3) Discuss Coyles collage technique. Review how it differs from other collage techniques and what makes it so unique. 4) Discuss the importance of color in a work of art. Review how different Coyles collages would look if they were in black and white. How does color help create the mood in a work of art? How does it help illustrate a scene? 5) Remind students that next class period they will make their own still life collage with the painting with paper technique. ! Class Period Two 1) Students will make a collage. Have students draw their favorite object so they can make a still life work of art. 2) Distribute magazines and other collage making supplies and have students collage over their drawings. 3) Have students nish and hand in their work. !

Assessment:
!To evaluate the student artwork, ask: Did the student complete a paper collage of a still life? Did they demonstrate Coyles collage technique? Does the collage focus on color? Does the selection of color help create a mood?

Make a Still Life Collage


Take a look at Megan Coyles still life collages. What colors does she use? How does the background compare to the foreground? Plan to make a still life collage using bright colors. You will use Megan Coyles painting with paper collage technique. In order to work like Coyle, you must include the following: 1) Look for specic colors in magazines. You will cut out pieces of color and not entire objects from photographs and ads. Remember that you want to make your still life collage very colorful. Think about what colors you want to use. Coyle often uses darker colors for her backgrounds and brighter colors for the objects in the still life.

2) Cut the paper into distinct geometric shapes. Coyle often uses lots of rectangular strips of paper for her still life work. See works listed below.
