When was Jesus born?

1 message Warren & Verity Downs <vwdowns@iglooware.com> To: Linda Downs <lindelldowns@hotmail.com> Cc: "vwdowns@gmail.com" <vwdowns@gmail.com> I've known for a long time that Jesus was most likely not born December 25, that shepherds would not have been in the field in winter, etc. But in response to someone's question on the subject, I finally did my own Bible study on the subject. Here is the evidence I uncovered: 1. Luke 1:5 tells us that Zechariah (John's father, who saw the angel in the temple) was of the "division of Abijah". 2. The priests were divided into 24 groups, each of which served about half a month in the temple, once a year (see 1 Chronicles 24:7-19). 3. Zechariah's division, Abijah, was the eighth division (1 Chronicles 24:10), so he would have served in the second half of the 4th month of the Jewish sacred year (used by the temple services). 4. The Jewish Sacred Year's 4th month corresponds to June/July in our calendar, so assuming Zechariah and Elisabeth conceived John the same month, John would have been born about March/April or near Passover. (See http://www.3dbibleproject.com/en/images/calendar.gif) 5. Jesus was conceived 6 months after John (Luke 1:26) and so would have been born about September/October or near the Feast of Tabernacles. 6. This is significant, because Jesus is "Immanuel", "God With Us", coming to pitch his tent with us (See Revelation 21:3). Of course there are a number of variables that could make the timing different, but I suspect that God would have had the timing work out for the Feast of Tabernacles. It would just make sense. In any case, I still believe it is appropriate to join other Christians in celebrating Christ, at whatever time of year that may be. God bless, Warren -Life's a lot like money. You spend it, then it's gone. Spend wisely. Mon, Dec 27, 2010 at 1:38 AM
