Assignment #2
Due: 5PM, Wednesday September 18, 2013
Assignments are due on the date indicated by 5:00 pm in the course dropbox. Absolutely no late
assignments will be graded. A mark of zero will be recorded in this case. Include a signed cover page
with your work, or it will not be graded.
To obtain maximum marks your answer should be in a form that another student could understand without
undue eort: a poorly expressed solution is not sucient even if the result is correct. Proofread your
assignment before you submit it. Use complete sentences and show your work.
The problems at the end of the chapters in Brown and Churchill are excellent training. If you want to
master the material, I recommend that you attempt a minimum of 3 questions from each chapter.
1. Write the following numbers in rectangular form, i.e. x + ij with x and j R. Additionally, write
(d) and (e) in exponential form, i.e. as :a
i
with :, R, < . Be sure to justify your
result.
(a) i
325
(b) (1 +

3i)
3
(c) 2 a
3i,2
(d) a
1+i,3
(e) 2
i
2. Find all solutions to the following equations:
(a) z
3
= 64
(b) z
8
= 2 + i
(c) z
2
+ 3z + 10 = 0 (hint: use the quadratic formula)
(d) z
6
9z
3
+ 8 = 0
3. Prove that |z| = 1 if, and only if,
1
z
= z.
4. Describe the image of the rectangle with corners 1 +i, 1 +i, 1 2i, 1 2i, under the mapping
| (z) = a
z
.
Bonus (Optional) Show that the sum of the roots of the polynomial equation c
:
z
:
+c
:1
z
:1
+ +c
0
= 0
is equal to c
:1
. Deduce that the sum of the roots to the equation z
8
1 = 0 is equal to zero.
Use these ideas to show the following. Let P be a regular :-sided polygon inscribed in a circle
of radius c. Show that the sum of the vectors drawn from the center of the circle to the vertices is
zero.
