Unit 2 Equations Day 5 Lesson Concept Connection 54 minutes

Objective: Students will complete a Concept Connection activity found in their digital textbooks that ties together the key concepts and vocabulary learned this far in the unit.

Standards: Common Core CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.7a : Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form x = a, a = a, or a = b results (where a and b are different numbers). CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.7b Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.8.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-onone, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly.

Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media Preparation: Set up account for each student using the Holt McDougal digital textbook if they do not already have one. Turn on all PCs Create groups of 3-4 Sharpen Pencils. Buy 5 boxes of Hot Tamales candies Materials: iPad for each student, stylis for each student, PC for each group, pencils, paper, individual Holt McDougal digital textbook accounts, NoteTaker HD app, 5 boxes of Hot Tamales candy Guided Instruction: Start by having students sign into their digital textbook, page 100 using their iPad. Teacher will walk through directions of the Concept Connection on page 100. Teacher will explain todays activity: Students will work in pre-assigned groups to complete all questions 1-4 of the Concept Connection. They will create at least one PowerPoint slide for each equation plus a Credits page stating each group members name and their contribution to the PowerPoint. This is a minimum of 5 pages. Must include visuals and sound. They will have 30 minutes to complete this activity. Teacher will assign students to their groups and their PCs. Students will complete activity within 30 minutes. Teacher will walk around and address any questions students may have. When students finish, each group will email teacher their PowerPoint. While students are working teacher will write Page 101, 2-30 even on the board. Students will begin working on the review problems from page 101 after they have completed the Concept Connection assignment. Students may choose to work independently or with their same pre-assigned groups. Work must include proof. While students are working on review problems, teacher will watch the students presentations that were emailed to her and choose a winner, and walk around to assess students level of understanding of the review problems. Winning group will each receive a box of Hot Tamale candies.

Homework: Any review questions form page 101 that are not completed in class will be done for homework. Closure Teacher will play the winning PowerPoint for the entire class Teacher will hand out the candy
