Right Click and add a new folder

Name the new folder EDUC 1215

Right click in the EDUC folder and add a new folder. Label it Notes.

Go back to your EDUC folder and right click to add another folder. Label it: Projects

Now you should have two folders in your EDUC 1215 folder. One that says Notes and One that says Projects.

Add a third folder to your EDUC 1215 folder and label it: Activities

Add a fourth folder and label it: Web Sites

Save your NGU folder to your flash drive.

- "In Pennsylvania, a teacher was suspended after students saw photos of her on Facebook posing with a stripper (Sullivan, 2010).

- Queensland School District's code of conduct states that "you must not use internet social networks such as Facebook...to contact or access present students enrolled in any school or institute" (Chilcott, 2009). - "In Florida, a teacher was suspended after posting a note saying he 'hated' his students and his school" (Sullivan, 2010).

Is it okay for teachers to have a personal Facebook page? Is it okay for students to make fake Facebook pages that degrade or incriminate their teachers? Is it okay for Facebook to be used as a tool in classrooms? Is it okay for teachers and students to be friends on Facebook?

Copyrighted materials may be used by teachers and students in their educational projects. But be careful, there are guidelines.

You may use up to 10% or 3 minutes, which ever is less of a copyrighted media work as long as it is incorporated as part of an educational multimedia project.

Up to 10% or 1000 words, whichever is less, may be reproduced or incorporated as part of an educational multimedia project. An entire poem of less than 250 words may be used, but not more than 3 poems by one poet, or 5 poems by different poets from any anthology.

Up to 10%, but in no event more than 30 seconds, of the music and lyrics from an individual musical work even if it is included as apart of a multimedia project. You can buy the CD and play it, or wrap the 30 seconds to play over and over.

Computer programs are covered by copyright protection The owner may make a new copy of the copyrighted program for archival (backup) purposes only. As a teacher, do not make an illegal copy of software. It could result in penalty.

If it is public domain anyone can freely copy and use it however they like. Copyrights do not last forever, they do expire. Simplest rule: if it were published before 1923, it is in public domain.

The Federal law states that all works created on or after January 1, 1978, have copyrights that last until seventy years after the death of the author. The works then become public domain. Unless you see a statement from the author saying that their work is public domain, assume it is NOT.

Copyrights of creative works do not last forever. Some can be renewed for a short time, but then they enter the Public Domain. It can then be copied or used freely by all.

Old copyrights usually give the date it was first made and the owner. Today copyright is granted as soon as the piece is created. You can still register your work if you plan to sue.

You created a song, lesson plan, or wrote a play for your class and you want to get it copy righted. What do you do? Nothing. In the past people had to give a copyright notice in order to be protected.

Record company sued 2 Live Crew, a rap group, for copyright infringement. The group asked for permission, were turned down and made their parody anyway. The group made a lot of money! Supreme Court upheld fair use clause.

Can not be sung by your students and placed on your website. It has been owned by Warner Music Group since 1998. Company charges a royalty for it to be used in films and on TV.

Copyleft is a new idea to get more work into the public domain where anyone can copy or use the material. Creators can waive their rights and you can use their work. Pictures on their FB would be an example.

Online theft- it can be songs, movies, software, games, books, etc.

A teacher downloads a shareware program on all of the computers in his classroom. The students use the program for a unit of study. He does not pay the $25.00 fee for each installation, but removes the software within 30 days. Is this appropriate use? Yes

A teacher is discussing politics in his civics class. He tapes the Presidential debates to use in his class for discussion. It contains great material and he uses it again the next year. Is this appropriate use? No, you can save taped programs for one year.
