Science Fair Project 2014

All 6th and 8th grade science students are required to complete a science fair project. The students will have the choice to participate in the SNSC science fair or they may choose to present their project in class. Students participating in the science fair will receive their grade based on their placing and points. Students will be provided time in the computer labs (January 20- January 24 and February 24- February 28). DUE: All projects are due on March 3, 2014. However, the science fair will take place on March 11, 2014.

Science Fair Projects Must Include (a poster board will be provided):

1. Purpose- What are you trying to find out? What is the title of your project? This must be a question. DO NOT USE I or I think 2. Hypothesis- Educated Guess. What do you think will happen? This must be written in an If then statement. Ex: If such and such are added, then there will create a chemical reaction. Make sure your hypothesis predicts what you think is going to happen. 3. Materials- What is the list of materials that you are using? This is just a list, dont leave anything out. 4. Research- At least one paragraph containing information that you gained about topic, including at least 2 sources. What have others done to investigate this topic? What were their results and conclusions? How will you apply or use the information that you found? 5. Procedure- This is a step by step process. Step 1 Step 2 This is just like a recipe. Make sure you dont leave anything out. The first procedure could be to gather the necessary materials. Someone must be able to repeat your experiment form your procedure. 6. Variables- Identify your manipulated (independent), responding (dependent), and controlled variables. 7. Observations- What did you observe? How often did you observe? Make sure your observations relate to the data you observed. 8. Data/Analysis- What did you find out? How many trials or times did you repeat the steps? Create graphs/ charts/ data tables to show comparisons and start drawing conclusions. 9. Conclusion- Was your hypothesis supported or not? You will basically restate your hypothesis in your conclusion. Did your data support your hypothesis? What did you find out? What would you do differently? Make sure you interpret your data and use the data to compare your results to the hypothesis. 10. Communicate your Results- Communicate your findings. What did you enjoy? What would you do differently? 11. Name, Grade, Teacher (a printed template will be provided)- needs to be located in the bottom right corner

Total Points Earned (Out of 30 Points Total) ____________ Questions that should be used during or following presentation (ask at least 2)
What was your purpose in completing this project? How was your experiment conducted? What were the unexpected results that you found from your project? If your data doesnt support your hypothesis, what would you change in your experiment to test your stated hypothesis? What was the manipulated variable in your experiment? What was the responding variable in your experiment? What did you learn from the completion of your project? How could the conclusions from your project be used in real life?
