First Semester M.Tech. Degree Examination, June 2009 (2008 Scheme) (Machine Design) MDC 1002 : ADVANCED THEORY OF MECHANISMS
Time: 3 Hours Instructions : 1) Answer any five full questions. 2) All questions carry equal marks. 1. Write short notes on the following : a) Straight line motion mechanisms. b) Grashofs law. c) Collineation axis. d) Bobillier construction. e) Pressure angle and jump phenomenon in Cams. 2. A four-bar function generator is used to generate the function y = 1 x for 1 x 3 between the input angle of a crank and the angle of the follower makes with the frame. Find the three precision points from Chebyshevs spacing if the initial values of input i.e. the crank angle and output i.e. the follower angle are 30 and 200 respectively. The difference between the final and initial values of the crank and follower angles are each equal to 90. Max. Marks: 100

3. The following particulars relate to a symmetrical circular cam operating a flat faced follower : Least radius = 25 mm Nose radius = 8 mm Lift of the valve = 10 mm Angle of action of cam = 120 Cam speed = 1200 r.p.m. Determine the flank radius and the maximum velocity, acceleration and retardation of the follower. Of the mass of the follower and valve with which it is in contact is 4 kg. Find the maximum force to be exerted by the spring to overcome inertia of the valve parts. 4. AP = 21 cm AB = 23 cm O4A = 33 cm O4B = 45 cm BC = 73 cm O6C = 30 cm

In the Fig. shown, the slider link (Point P) moves to the left at constant velocity of 1 cm/sec. For the configuration shown determine : i) the velocities of points A, B, C ii) the acceleration of points A, B and C iii) angular acceleation of links 3, 4, 5 and 6.
