Lesson Preparation Teacher Candidate: Andrea Maier Title of Lesson: Study Time Grade Level: 7th Grade Subject

Area: Science Lesson Topic (What is the big idea?): The students will learn the words and the definitions about the human cell. What standard(s) and/or IEP goal(s) will it address? Standard: 2. Life Science Concepts and skills students master: 2. The human body is composed of atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems that have specific functions and interactions b. Develop, communicate, and justify an evidence-based scientific explanation regarding the functions and interactions of the human body Extended Evidence Outcomes With appropriate supports, students can: I. Identify the major organs that make up a specific system (respiratory, circulatory and digestive) Extended Readiness Competencies Content based access skills: 1. Attaching meaning to symbols related to specific systems in the human body Main Objective of Instruction (What do you want the student(s) to learn?): The students will learn about science vocabulary. The students will learn about the cell and six parts that make up a cell. The students will learn the six words and their definitions and also label the cell with the words. The students when given the six words will match the word with the parts of the cell and will take a quiz on Quizlet after they learn about the cell. The students will also know the definitions of the six parts of the cell with an 80 percent score. This will let me know that the students understands the new science vocabulary. Supporting Objectives: The students will learn the words plus their definitions which are Chloroplasts, capture energy from sunlight and use it to produce food for the cell. Nucleus, a membrane-bound organelle in the cell that contains DNA. Mitochondrion, cell organelle that converts the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use. Cytoplasm, a jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended. Cell wall, A rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms. Cell membrane, a thin, flexible barrier around a cell; regulates what enters and leaves the cell. The students will learn how to label a cell and know its

definition. The students will then use Quizlet as a study tool, so they can test their knowledge on the six definitions and matching them to their corresponding word. This will let the student know if they need to study more. Specific Strategies to be taught/modeled: I will ask my students why is it important study new vocabulary words in other classes like science, language arts, and social studies. I will tell the students that this is another tool to use if they cannot study with a partner. The students will learn about six new science vocabulary words and the students will learn their definitions. They will also learn how to label a cell with the six words. The students will then take a quiz on Quizlet, and test their knowledge on the vocabulary words by matching them with their definition. Planning for individual differences (mediated scaffolding): What are the accommodations/modifications you need to prepare? The accommodations for this lesson will be giving the students time to study on Quizlet. This will give the students time to study at their own pace. The students will also have a picture of the cell and they can match the word to the part of the cell. The words will have definitions on the back of the them in case they need a reminder. What background knowledge do the students have? How will you assess students learning pre, during and post? : I will ask my students why is it important study new vocabulary words in other classes like science, language arts, and social studies. During the lesson the students and I will learn about the six new words and their definitions. The students will take turns on matching up the words to the pictures. The post assessment will be the students will take a words with definitions matching quiz on Quizlet and will pass the quiz with 80% or better. What management/grouping issues do you need to consider? The things that I will have to consider is giving the students enough wait time when asking questions. I will have to make sure to give each student one-on-one time to both students. This will depend on how well they are doing with their six new vocabulary words. Materials and Resources: Computer, pencil, paper, list of vocabulary words, definition, cell pictures. How/where will students be able to integrate (generalize) this learning? The students can use this in any of their classes from science, history, social studies, and language arts. They can use this to learn their vocabulary words and their definitions. How will you evaluate the lesson (judicious review)? The students will take a matching words with definitions quiz on Quizlet and will pass the quiz with 80% or better.

Lesson Title: Study Time Main Objective of this lesson: The students will learn the words and the definitions about the cell. The students know how to match social studies words and language arts. The baseline for science words are 50% or less.

Anticipatory Set- How will you get the student(s)' attention?) Relate lesson to prior learning. Why do you think it is important to learn words and their definitions? The lesson then will go into why and how you can learn new science words and their definitions. Teaching: (Is this an informal presentation, direct presentation, or structured discovery?) What strategies will you be using? Be sure to include differentiation. The lesson will be a direct presentation. The lesson will go into detail about learning new words and how you can study them. I do... I will be using self talk during this mini lesson. I will go over two of the words and its definitions. I will then go over the picture and where the words will go, and explain the definition. We do... The students and I will work on the two words and their definitions. We will then go over the picture of the cell and label it together. The students and I will study the words and definitions and where they go on the cell. You do... The students will be given six words on a cell. The students will learn the words and their meanings. The students will label the cell picture with their new words they learned and say what that part of the cell does. The students will then go the computer and find the cell study page. The students will study and take their test they will have to pass with an 80% or better. Checking for Understanding- What questions will you ask your students? Why is it important to study new words and their definitions? What classes could you use this strategies in and why? Why is it important to understand words and their meanings? Where else can this apply to in your everyday life inside and outside of school. Guided Practice or Discovery: The lesson is guided practice the students have done very little to no studying of new words or definitions. I would like for the student to be active learners throughout this lesson. Closure: Student(s) summarize, demonstrate learning of lesson. The lesson will show the students that you can have different ways to study. This will show them that if they have no one to study with they can easily practice by themselves. The students will take a matching words with definitions quiz on Quizlet and will pass the quiz with 80% or better. Independent Practice: What will this look like? Is it homework? Completion of a product independently? The students will be able to study their new words in class and at the end of the week they will take a matching the words with definitions quiz on Quizlet and will pass the quiz with 80% or better.

Closure: Student(s) summarize, demonstrate learning of lesson. Independent Practice (You Do). Formally END the lesson. The students will be given six words on a cell. The students will learn the words and their meanings. The students will label the cell picture with their new words they learned and say what that part of the cell does. The students will then go the computer and find the cell study page. The students will study and take their test they will have to pass with an 80% or better. This lesson plan looks at how you can teach your students new vocabulary words and their definitions. This lesson plan can be tailored to work with any curriculum. The thing that I learned with teaching this lesson is that I had to go back and pull on the students background knowledge. Once they had revisited the words and the definitions the students moved on with little to no help. I did a diagram of a cell and the students worked on the learning the words and where they when with the cell. The tool that I used to measure how well the students learned was Quizlet.com. This lets me see what I need to work on more with the students and what students understood from the lesson. This also lets me know what I need to change with the lesson and what I can change to better my students learning.
