WARNINGS 1. Before starting inspection, do not actuate trigger until weapon has been cleared. Inspect chamber to be sure that it is empty. Check for obstructions in barrel bore. 2. Ejector is under spring tension; unintentional release will result in flying parts and possible injury. 3. Detent is under spring tension; unintentional release will result in flying parts and possible injury. 4. Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the job. Striking any object with hammer can result in flying debris or parts. Safety glasses or goggles are required when performing maintenance. 5. Several parts of MK 12 MOD 1 are under spring tension. Use caution when removing these parts to avoid injury or loss of parts. 6. MK 12 MOD 1s bolt must not be interchanged with other MK 12 MOD 1s unless headspace has been checked. 7. Dry cleaning solvent is flammable and toxic. Make sure there is adequate ventilation. Keep away from ignition source. Make sure PPE is available when using solvent. 8. Do not use dry cleaning solvent on plastic or rubber parts or components. Due to aggressive nature solvents can render plastic or rubber parts unserviceable. 9. The buffer/spring is under spring tension; unintentional release will result in flying parts and possible injury. 10. Ensure weapon is unloaded prior to gaging.

CAUTIONS 1. 2. 3. Both parts are under spring tension; be sure to maintain receiver in a position that will prevent parts from flying. Trigger group is held together with a pilot pin. Do not remove pilot pin or trigger group components will separate. Do not allow hammer to fall freely. This can damage hammer and receiver. Keep thumb over hammer.

GENERAL In order to use this manual efficiently, you need to know: 1. Illustrations for the maintenance procedures show only those parts affected by the operation being performed. 2. Whenever the male gender is mentioned in the manual (i.e., crewmen, repairman), is also pertains to females. INDEXES This manual is organized to help you find the information you need quickly. There are several useful indexes and lists. 1. Table of Contents. Lists, in order, all chapters, sections, and appendices, gives page references. 2. Nomenclature Cross-Reference List. 3. Chapter Overviews. A summary of the chapter content is located at the beginning of each chapter. 4. Symptom Index. Located before the troubleshooting table in each maintenance chapter, they list possible rifle malfunctions and the page which describes the troubleshooting procedures. 5. Alphabetical Index. CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
CHAPTER OVERVIEW This chapter contains general information and equipment description and data on the MK 12 MOD 1. SECTION I. GENERAL INFORMATION 1-1. SCOPE. a. Type of Manual. This manual is provided for organizational and intermediate maintenance. b. Model Number and Equipment Name. The U.S. Marine Corps MK 12 Mod 1 Special Purpose Rifle (SPR). c. Purpose of Equipment. The purpose of this rifle is to provide rifle squad with a versatile weapon that meets the need for precision fire, multiple target engagements, and target suppression capability while eliminating the need to carry two or more weapons. 1-2. ISSUE AND RECOVERY OF INDIVIDUAL RIFLES. Individual rifles will be issued and recovered in the same manner as other individual weapons. NAVMC 10576 (Memorandum Receipt for Individual Weapons and Accessories) will be used as the issue document. NAVMC 10520 (Weapons Custody Receipt Card) will be used when the MK 12 MOD 1 System (Scope, Rifle, and Suppressor) is drawn from the armory for use. Detailed instructions for using these forms are contained in TM 4700-15/1_. 1-3. REPORTING EQUIPMENT IMPROVEMENT, RECOMMENDATIONS (EIR). If a way to improve this weapon is recognized, submit Recommended Changes to Publications/Logistics Maintenance Data Coding NAVMC (10772) in accordance with MCO 4855.10_ to below listed address. Report to: Marine Corps LogCom Command Element Attn: Quality Assurance Officer (L15) 814 Radford Blvd, Ste 20330 Albany, GA 31704-330 1-4. DESTRUCTION OF MARINE CORPS MATERIAL TO PREVENT ENEMY USE. To render equipment useless to the enemy, Marine Corps personnel shall destroy it by weapons, fire, smashing, disassembly, burning, or other means in accordance with TM 750-244-7. 1-5. MAINTENANCE FORMS, RECORDS, AND REPORTS. The Marine Corps forms and procedures used for equipment maintenance will be those prescribed by the current edition of TM 4750-15/1_ Ground Equipment Record Procedures, Appendix A, References, lists those specific forms to be used with the MK 12 MOD 1, but is not to be considered all-inclusive. Responsibility for proper execution of forms and records rests with the using unit. In order to maintain accurate records, it is imperative that units follow these instructions:

a. NAVMC 1018, Inspection Tag. This form must be attached to each MK 12 MOD 1 that requires repair. The instructions for completing this form are found in TM 4700-15/1_. b. NAVMC 10558A, Weapon Record Book, Part II. This form is the most important of the three forms used with the MK 12 MOD 1 and must be filled out according to the paragraphs below. Each MK 12 MOD 1, when received from the supply system, will have a NAVMC 10558A attached. Receiving units must verify the serial number (weapon, scope, and suppressor) recorded on the front of weapon record book to ensure that they are identical. The NAVMC 10558A must be pulled out in the following manner, without reference to any other publications: (1) (2) Front Cover. The manufacturer will have filled out this page. No further entries will be made on it. Page 3. This page will have been filled out when weapon is received by the using unit. The only additional entries required will be telescope serial number, if telescope is replaced. When a Weapon Record Book is replaced the number of CUMULATIVE TOTAL OF ROUNDS FIRED should be recorded from the previous Weapon Record Book. Page 5, Unit Commanders Record. Record daily total of rounds fired. Make entries as shown in Figure 1-1. Page 51, Bore Inspection Record. This record contains all of maintenance data performed by organizational and higher level maintenance. Trigger pull (in lbs) and telescope serial number will be entries already made in Weapon Record Book when initially received. Lost, Destroyed, or Misplaced Weapon Record Book. In the event a Weapon Record Book must be reconstructed, a limited technical inspection at intermediate maintenance level must be performed. CHAPTER 2 MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS


CHAPTER OVERVIEW This chapter contains information regarding repair parts, special tools, common tools and equipment, instructions for service upon receipt, Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS), troubleshooting, maintenance to keep weapon in good repair, and storage. SECTION I. REPAIR PARTS, SPECIAL TOOLS, COMMON TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT 2-1. REPAIR PARTS. Repair Parts are listed and illustrated in Appendix B. 2-2. SPECIAL TOOLS.

Special Tools authorized for organizations maintenance are listed and illustrated in Appendix C. 2-3. EXPENDABLE SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS LIST.

Expendable/durable supplies and materials are listed and illustrated in Appendix D. 2-4. TORQUE LIMITS AND SPECIFICATIONS.

Torque limits and specifications are listed in Appendix E. 2-5. LIST OF LOCALLY MANUFACTURED TOOL.

Locally manufactured tools are listed in Appendix F. SECTION II. SERVICE UPON RECEIPT 2-6. GENERAL.

When MK 12 MOD 1 SPR is received, it is the using organizations responsibility to determine whether the weapon has been properly prepared for service by supplying organization and whether it is in condition to perform its mission. 2-7. SERVICE UPON RECEIPT OF MATERIAL. WARNING Before starting inspection, do not actuate trigger until weapon has been cleared. Inspect chamber to be sure that it is empty. Check for obstructions in barrel bore. NOTE Weapon must be inspected and/or gaged at least quarterly for safety and serviceability IAW PMCS.

Gas Block and Gas Tube

Check Gas Block (6) for cracks, burrs, breaks, deformities, and movement. Inspect Gas Tube (1) for cracks, bends, bulges, and deformities, and tight fit. Inspect Suppressor Alignment Collar (3) for dents, bulges, and cracks. Inspect Set Screw (2); ensure it fits tightly on barrel and does not rotate. Inspect Thread Protector (5) for bends, cracks, breaks, and thread damage. Inspect Muzzle Break (4) for tightness, warping, and impact strikes. Inspect external threads for damage. Ensure Gas Tube Retaining Pin (7) is present. Ensure Gas Block Retaining Screws (8) are tight.

SECTION IV. TROUBLESHOOTING 2-9. MAINTENANCE TROUBLESHOOTING. a. This section contains troubleshooting information for locating and correcting most operating troubles, which may develop in the MK 12 MOD 1 SPR. Each malfunction for part, assembly, or sub-assembly is followed by list of test or inspections, which will help determine corrective actions to take. b. This manual cannot list all possible malfunctions that may occur, nor all tests or inspections and corrective actions. c. Knowing and understanding MK 12 MOD 1 SPRs Cycle of Operation will help tremendously in identifying specific problems. (1) MALFUNCTION Unburned granules or powder residue in Suppressor (1): (a) CORRECTIVE ACTION Soak suppressor body in a closed solvent container filled with oil free cleaning solvent overnight. After soaking overnight use hot soapy water to wash remaining chemicals from internal voids of suppressor. Use fresh hot water to rinse and final clean suppressor. Use compressed air to thoroughly dry internal area of suppressor. Lightly lubricate internal threads with CLP.

Attach a 1/2 drive torque wrench to combination wrench (1). Torque is measured when both wrenches are used together. Place combination wrench onto the barrel nut ensuring that all three pins of combination wrench are engaged in barrel nut (2). Turn CW and torque to 30 ft/lbs (min) to 80 ft/lbs (max) (3). To accommodate stretching of aluminum receiver threads, loosen and re-torque Barrel Nut three times. On third time insert gas tube from back of receiver through gas tube hole. Torque barrel nut until gas tube can be moved through and out of barrel nut (4).

(6) Install Gas Block / Tube on Barrel (cont) - Using a 3/32" Allen Wrench, remove forward set screw of gas block and slide gas block and tube onto barrel (1). Ensure that gas block is at muzzle end and gas tube is on bottom. Using brass drift punch tap gas block, on all four axis to ensure consistent movement to the rear, and tube onto barrel. Use caution to ensure that gas tube enters barrel nut cleanly and does not become damaged (2). Continue to tap gas block on until the forward set screw hole is aligned with corresponding recess of barrel (3). Apply a drop of Loctite 242 to the forward set screw and install by turning CW. Tighten until snug. DO NOT over tighten, this will strip threads. Complete this process for remaining set screw.

Handguard / Rail Adapter - Leaving receiver upper receiver action block in place, turn receiver right side up and secure in vice. Insert handguard alignment pins at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions of barrel nut (1). Slide handguard over barrel, threaded end first and "T" ribs up. Tighten handguard nut by turning CW (2) using strap wrench. Verify torque to 25 - 28 ft. lbs.

Apply a drop of Loctite 242 to the set screw. Using a 3/32" Allen Wrench, install and tighten until snug by turning CW (2). There is no indexing point for set screw or collar, just ensure collar is pushed fully on barrel until its rearward movement stops against shoulder (3).

NOTE Crush washer cannot be reused. (9) Muzzle Break - Slide a .0031 shim (from 7 pc shim kit in Appendix B) over muzzle of barrel followed by a crush washer with concave portion facing muzzle (1). Place muzzle break onto barrel and hand tighten (2). Note that muzzle break has two bridge portions in its mid-section. One metal bridge portion is thinner than other. Your end state will be for the thin bridge portion to be in 12 o'clock position as it relates to the weapon in its upright position. Continue to add shims until the thin bridge portion is in 11 o'clock position when hand tightened (2). This will leave you approximately 15-20 degrees of torque room left. Having this condition in place will forestall over tightening muzzle break and causing damage. Once 11 o'clock position is met, back Muzzle break off and apply Loctite 262 to threads. Place an adjustable wrench over two slots of muzzle break (most rearward position near threads for Suppressor) and tighten until thin bridge portion is in 12 o'clock position (3). Ensure that muzzle of the barrel does not protrude into the muzzle break itself, if it does add shims as necessary.

Using roll pin punch, drive retaining pin in from opposite side of punch until pin captures ejector (4). Using 1/16" punch, finish driving pin to a point just below flush (5). If ejector retaining pin is damaged, replace.

Once detent is depressed turn pivot pin in either direction to forestall detent catching in pivot pin detent slot. Slowly pull pivot pin from receiver. Use caution as detent is under spring tension.

2-15. LOWER RECEIVER MAINTENANCE. TRIGGER ASSEMBLY INSPECTION/DISASSEMBLY/REPAIR/REASSEMBLY a. Inspect - trigger group for function and damage. Trigger is a two stage trigger. First stage is movement of trigger rearward prior to engaging disconnector and sear (take up). Second stage begins at end of stage one, where pressure rearward on trigger must be increased in order for disconnector to function and release hammer. This is measured in pounds and should be between 3.5 lbs and 4.5 lbs. Process of measuring trigger pull weight is detailed in gaging section of this manual. If trigger pull weight is not within tolerance or if trigger is absent in first stage, attempt to adjust back into specification. If trigger cannot be adjusted back into specification, remove and replace. NOTE Adjustment of the KAC Two-Stage Full-Auto Trigger is more involved than adjusting a semi-auto only trigger. When using any Loctite primer or adhesive, read manufacturers instructions on cure times. Setscrews must have a snug fit. Constant adjustments of setscrews will cause them to loose there snug fit. b. Adjustment (1) Install the trigger assembly, with a short pilot pin, into the weapon. Install trigger pin by aligning trigger assembly hole with receiver hole and inserting trigger pin pushing out the pilot pin from right to left until flush. Pilot pin can be retained for future use. Install hammer (PN 22362) (long legs of hammer spring (94025) lay on top of trigger pin). Insert hammer pin from right to left until flush. Apply Loctite No. 7471 to setscrews (PN 21037). Allow this to dry for 5 minutes. Then apply Loctite No. 277 to the threads of the setscrews. Re-install the coated setscrews (PN 21037) into the front and rear hooks. Adjust both setscrews fully clockwise gently. With selector on SEMI adjust front hook setscrew counter clockwise until the hammer will lock back. Do not force. Adjust rear hook setscrew counter clockwise until it engages the hammer just prior to the front hooks release. Lock the hammer (PN 94185) to the rear; rotate the selector to fire or semi. Pull the trigger through the first stage continuing on through the second stage should be smooth until the second stage engages. The second stage should be a snap release. Rotating the front hook setscrew (21037) clockwise will increase trigger wight and introduce creep. Counterclockwise will decrease trigger weight and creep. Trigger over travel and wight may be adjusted with the rear hook setscrew (PN 21307) (clockwise = less, counterclockwise = more). With the selector on AUTO fully depress hammer. The sear should engage the hammer. Push the sear forward to disengage. Hammer should release only to the point of engaging the front of the sear forward to disengage. Hammer should release only to the point of engaging the front hook. Pulling the trigger should release the hammer completely. Place trigger on trigger pull scale. Ensure that safety selector moves and functions in Semi, Auto, and Safe positions. (1) Safe Position - With lower receiver separated from upper receiver and thumb over hammer, depress trigger (1). Hammer should not release from disconnector, and move forward. CAUTION Do not allow hammer to fall freely. This can damage Hammer and Receiver. Keep thumb over Hammer. (2) Semi Position - With lower receiver separated from upper receiver and placing your thumb over hammer, depress trigger (2). Hammer should release from disconnector, and move forward. Push sear forward in auto position to allow disengagement. (3) Auto Position - With lower receiver separated from upper receiver and placing your thumb over hammer, depress trigger (2). Hammer should release from disconnector, and move forward. Push auto sear forward in auto position to allow disengagement.

If safety selector does not function or is broken, remove and replace. Pistol grip must be removed to access selector detent and spring, which in turn allows disassembly of selector. See pistol grip disassembly for further instructions and illustrations (see page 2-55). b. Disassembly - With pistol grip removed, turn receiver right side up allowing selector detent to fall from receiver; be cautious not to lose detent. Once detent is removed, grasp selector with fingers and remove it from receiver. c. Reassembly - Place selector into left side of receiver, and reassemble following pistol grip reassembly instructions. (see page 2-56)

Slowly start to slide buttstock off of buffer tube and you will see takedown pin detent spring (2). Use caution not to lose spring. Once buttstock is removed (3). Takedown Pin Detent (a), Spring (b) and Takedown Pin (c) can be removed. CAUTION Catch helical spring, detent and takedown pin to prevent loss. (1) Using a combination wrench place square notch of combination wrench over square protrusion of lower receiver extension. Attach a square drive wrench to combination wrench and rotate CCW. Once loose place hand over buffer retaining detent and continue to rotate lower receiver extension CCW. Detent and spring can now be received. Continue CCW turn on lower receiver extension until it can be removed.

Gaging inspections shall take place prior to and immediately after operational deployments and quarterly. Gaging will be completed as part of troubleshooting process when investigating weapon malfunctions or when critical parts are replaced or repaired (i.e. replacement of firing pin). Gaging will be conducted by qualified 2111. 3-3. GENERAL.

Safety dictates that critical tolerance instances be measured via gages in order to prevent catastrophic failure of MK 12 MOD 1. Failure to comply with gaging requirements can create condition where weapon can fire out of "battery" or fail to fire at critical moment. In either condition, serious injury or loss of life can result.

With gage vertical to bolt face and making continuous contact with bolt face, slide Min. notch over firing pin (Figure 3-10). Feel for contact between Min. notch of gage and firing pin. Contact need not be substantial but present. If no contact is noted, firing pin protrusion is too short. (1) If contact is not present, ensure both bolt and firing pin are clean and retry. If after cleaning contact is still not noted, replace firing pin and test again. You may need to replace both bolt and firing pin. If bolt is replaced YOU MUST gage headspace.

B-1. SCOPE.

This appendix lists and authorizes spares and repair parts; special tools; special test measurement, and diagnostic equipment (TMDE); and other special support equipment required for performance of organizational and intermediate maintenance of the MK 12 MOD 1 SPR.
