Prerequisites: Students taking this class must have passed English 101 and English 201 with at least a Cminus. Course Description: This course is designed to provide a principled basis for grammar decisions for writing and teaching. In addition, the critical importance of English grammar in the political and economic development of the international community will become obvious. First, a quick review of the development of the English Language from its prehistoric Indo-European to its current status as a world language will place the study of grammar in a historical context. Next, a brief study of the different approaches to grammar will provide helpful criteria for selection of writing manuals, grammar textbooks, and teaching methods. A clear distinction between the objectives of prescriptive and descriptive grammars will be emphasized. Students whose objective in taking the course is to improve the grammar of their own writing will become skilled in the use of handbooks and manuals as they learn the structure of English and the terminology used to describe its elements. The greatest portion of the semester will comprise a detailed analysis of the basic grammar of standard written English, using the textbook Analyzing English Grammar6th edition by Thomas P. Klammer, Muriel R. Schulz, and Angela Della Volpe. This text begins with a chapter defining grammar and the second chapter introduces varieties of English, regionally and socially distinguishable both locally and internationally. To cap the semesters learning experience, each student will do a written critique of a grammar text or handbook and present an oral report of the evaluation to the class. Course Objectives: This course is designed to meet the needs of students who plan to use grammar and writing skills in their careers or to teach English to either native speakers of English or to speakers of English as an additional language. Students completing this course should accomplish the following: Survey briefly the history of English and traditional and scientific grammars
