the piece In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg, and primarily gain an understanding of form through listening. Students will also be able to offer their interpretation of different musical passages.

Date: 12/2/12 Title: In the Hall Of the Mountain National Standard(s) Addressed: Listening to, analyzing, and describing music. Evaluating music & music performances. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, & disciplines outside the arts.

Assessment: Informal, group discussion Materials: -CD with In the Hall of the Mountain King and Cups by Anna Kendrick -Squares of construction paper for drawing (50) -drawing utensils (crayons, pencils, colored pencils) -Listening map for students (50) Preparation: (10 Min.) - Teacher (Stephen) performs a silent interpretive movement while song plays. Students will watch and listen. Teacher will lead small discussion on what took place (touching on dynamics, expression, possibly form). Teacher explains abbreviated story behind song. Teaching Sequence: (20-25 min.) - Teachers hand out listening maps, asking students to follow along with finger while listening to piece again. Allow time for second listen if needed. After listening, discuss how sections differ. Introduce form by assigning letters to different sections and display form of In the Hall on white board. Connect form of this song to Cups by Anna Kendrick. Song is Verse-Chorus, or ABAB etc. (similar to In the Hall). Teacher will then hand out construction paper for students and allow students to draw their interpretation (can be picture, symbol, etc.) of the sections as they hear them. After students draw, Teacher asks them to turn paper over and write A and B for the sections. Allow a few students to present their symbols and explain why they drew what they drew.

Culmination: (5 minutes) - Tie-in/back to In the Hall. Discuss similarities and differences with two songs (dynamics, change in texture or notes) Extension: Students can offer own examples of songs they listen to with similar form, or they can offer examples of songs with different form.
