FLOW THROUGH V NOTCH.

AIM: to find the coefficient of discharge Cd for a triangular V notch.
Theory: In hydraulics engineering notches are commonly used to regulate flow in
rivers and open channels. The relationship between the water-level upstream of
notch and discharge over it is, generally, known so that the discharge at any time
may be found by observing the up stream water level.
The equation for discharge past a sharp edged notch can be derived from:

Q = Cd
2 g tan h .

Apparatus: in apparatus a bottom storage tank with pump is given to circulate water
to a test tank for measurement of flow rate. The tank above the bottom tank is
fitted with V notch.
Measuring tank is given at the side of test tank for the measurement of water flow
rate.
PROCEDURE:
1. Record width of notch; the angle of notch.
2. Level the apparatus properly and establish zero of level at bottom of notch
by adding water in the test tank.
3. Admit water in test tank by beaker slowly to establish correct level below
notch.
4. Now start pump and control water flow rate by adjusting by-pass valve.
5. Take series of measurement of discharge and head over notch.
6. Note correct height of discharge over notch for the particular flow rate.
