Roger Lathbury answered 4 years ago Ishamel, in New York, feels suicidal, decides to go on a whaling voyage from Massachsuetts. There he meets Queequeg, a native of the south seas. They sign on to the ship Pequod, captained by Ahab. On Christmas day, the Pequod starts its voyage around the world to hunt whales. Soon Captain Ahab reveals that he is really after just one whale, the one who bit off his leg, Moby Dick. They sail around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, then through the Pacfic Ocean, capturing whales and meeting other whaling ships: the Rosebud, the Town Ho, the Jungfrau. After a dramatic storm, in the south sea, off Japan, the Pequod encounters Moby Dick. The Pequod, includingIshmael, Queequeg, the first, second, and third mates, and Ahab, chase Moby Dick for three days. On the third day, Ahab harpoons Moby Dick. The line tangles around his neck, and he is drawn down into the sea when Moby Dick sounds. His diving creates a whirlpool that also draws the Pequod down with it. All perish except Ishmael. He is rescued to tell the story by one of the boats the Pequod has previously encountered. Asker's rating & comment

akaMaryn answered 4 years ago This happens to be the one assigned novel I never read. I started it and fell asleep dozens of times. You can make time to find either the movie version with Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab, which is quite faithful to the novel, or the Classic comic book, which is also quite faithful. I still got an A in the class that assigned it, since my professor could spot Cliff notes but couldn't spot my didn't-read-it sources. From Book-a-Minute:

Ishmael

Call me Ishmael. Captain Ahab Crew, we will seek the white whale and kill it, because I am insane. Crew Alas, your destructive obsession will be our undoing. (They almost find the white whale. Then they almost find the white whale. Then they find it.) Captain Ahab I stab at thee. I stab at thee. (Everybody dies except Ishmael, although this is no surprise, because it was foreshadowed CONTINUALLY from the BEGINNING.)

THE END
