Instructional Strategies Anticipatory Set Synonym game: have students work to identify the three words key, word, and search from the list of synonyms for the words. Modeling / Information Provision Define keywords. Explain how synonyms can be used in the place of certain words to turn up different search results. Demonstrate a Google search about arm injuries. Use the term broken arm as a popular term for an arm injury. Look through results. Next search fractured arm to show students that using proper and expert vocabulary can turn up better results. Contrast this with a search for a busted arm, which could be a synonym for a broken arm. Busted arm turns up irrelevant results. Are Rhinos Headed Toward Extinction? Poachers in South Africa illegally kill a record number of rhinos
By Jennifer Marino Walters Last year was a record-breaking year for rhinocerosesbut not in a good way. In 2013, a total of 1,004 rhinos were poached (illegally hunted) in South Africa, the country where almost all of the worlds rhinos live. Thats an increase of more than 50 percent from 2012when 668 rhinos were killedaccording to the countrys Department of Environmental Affairs. It was also the most South African rhinos killed in one year.

A Heroic Life Nelson Mandela is remembered worldwide as a champion of equality


By Brian Fitzgerald | for Scholastic News People around the world are still mourning the death of Nelson Mandela. The civil rights hero and former President of South Africa died last month at age 95. For years, Mandela fought to end segregation (the practice of keeping groups apart, often because of race) in his country.

Homemade Brains Scientists grow human brain tissue in a dish


By Sara Goudarzi Scientists in Austria have put on their thinking caps for a brainy experiment. Using special new medical techniques, the researchers managed to grow human brain tissue in a laboratory. Why try to grow artificial, or human made, brains? The scientists hope that by understanding how the brain develops, they may be able to gain insight into brain disorders (diseases or conditions that are not normal).
