TITLE: AZUKI BEAN : Germination and Growth OBJECTIVES: - To investigate the germination and growth processes of Azuki beans. - To compare the seedling characteristics of Azuki beans growth on Earth and in space. HYPOTHESIS: - The growth of Azuki bean seedlings is better in space than on Earth. VARIABLES: 1. Constant variable : Type of bean Number of seeds Size of rockwool Room temperature (Ambient condition)
2. Manipulated variable : Place of investigation 3. Responding variable : Height of seedling Length of roots Colour of seedling MATERIALS AND APPARATUS:
Graph paper
container rockwool
ruler
thread
PROCEDURE: DAY 1 1. Prepare six pieces of rockwool blocks (3cm x 3cm x 3cm).
3. Three Azuki bean seeds will be planted into each rockwool. Place the hilum side up.
6. Tilt the container to discard any excess water that is not absorbed by the rockwool.
8. Make sure the container is kept in total darkness (use your creativity). DAYS 2-6 7. Observe the Azuki bean seedlings at each block from Day 2 to Day 7 at about the same time respectively. a. Take out Block 1 from the container (after 24 hours). b. Gently pull out the seedlings from the block. c. Select the tallest seedling. d. Place the seedling on a graph paper. e. Take photographs of the selected seedling. f. Measure the height of seedling and the length of roots using a ruler and thread. g. Draw and color the structure of the seedling. 8. Record the observation in the table given online.
9. Repeat Step 6 for Block 2 6 on Day 3 7 (at the same time). Properly discard the seedling after observation. 10. Collecting data refer Appendix 1.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES: Design and carry out an experiment related to gravity. Note: 1. Use the remaining Azuki bean seeds in your experiment. 2. Report your experiment as an attachment to Angkasa.
