Weather (Lesson 4)
Section
065
STANDARD:
S4.A.2.1.3: Observe a natural phenomenon (e.g., weather changes, length of
daylight/night, movement of shadows, animal migrations, growth of plants), record
observations, and then make a prediction based on those observations.
S4.D.2.1.2: Identify weather patterns from data charts or graphs of the data (e.g.,
temperature, wind direction, wind speed, cloud types, precipitation).
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
A. Students will understand the term greenhouse effect
1. Students will understand why the greenhouse effect is
important to our survival on Earth
B. Students will understand the term air mass
C. Students will understand the term front
II.
Instructional Materials
A. Science Text book
B. (student) science notebooks
C. crayons or colored pencils
III.
3. front
C. Big idea
1. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would be too cold for
human life
IV.
Implementation
A. Introduction
1. Students will be introduced to 3 new science vocabulary terms
a. Students will look up and read the meaning of each
word in their science glossary
i. Instead of writing the definition, students will
then draw a picture to represent each vocab term
1. Students will draw and color 3 pictures
in their science notebook
2. Once completed, students will then be given the option to share
their drawings with the class
B. Development
1. Students will read about Air and Weather
a. After students read, teacher will ask the students an
open-ended questions
i. Q: How does the atmosphere work like a
greenhouse
2. Students will next read about Air Masses
a. After students read, teacher will ask the students an
open-ended question
i. Q: What is an air mass?
3. Students will then transition to the Smart board
a. Students will learn how air masses meet in a Prezi
presentation
i. Students will also learn the term: front
b. After Prezi, students will watch a youtube video
demonstrating the movement of air masses
i. This video will also relate to how
meteorologists predict the weather
C. Closure
1. Students will return to their seats
a. Students will then draw more detailed picture for 3
vocabulary terms
i. Students will use their knowledge from the
lesson and correct front lines to describe each
vocabulary term
