Play Session

Title: At the Farm Objectives That the child will be enabled to: hold conversations and sustain focus on their particular play activity. expand his/her vocabulary and thinking around the activity in question. practise the play activity with a view to transferring skills practised to other areas of learning. Objectives specific to: Puppet Theatre The child will be enabled to Design and create handheld puppets using a variety of colours, sequins and googly eyes. Dramati e their favourite scene or an adaptation from !"he #ig in the #ond$ or any farmyard scene using their puppets in the puppet theatre box. Playdough The child will be enabled to %ould the playdough to create a variety of shapes, including, if the children choose to do so, animal shapes, farmyard buildings and machinery, etc. Play Corner The Farmers itchen The child will be enabled to #lay in role as farmer, children, pets, animals, household visitors and characters from story as necessary. &se the play kitchen and resources supplied to create a scene in 'elligan$s / a farmer$s kitchen or cottage. (mploy language practised in oral language lessons about !"he #ig in the #ond.$ Small !orld Play The Farmyard The child will be enabled to Direct the animals and people figures through the farmyard (mploy language practised in )eography lesson about direction * over, under, between, across, etc. +ocate homes for all the animals #lay in role as the animals, farmers, etc, emplyong language practised in oral language lessons "esources #lay rota, play materials as per rota, teacher checklist.

Classroom Organisation "he children will work in colour,coded groups and will undertake the activity dictated by the play rota chart. #ntroduction - will introduce the theme by showing different pictures from !"he #ig in the #ond$ and discussing the characters, animals and settings involved. - will develop this by asking questions that will allow the children to question the story and its characters further. ./hat other farmyard animals did we talk about this week0 Do you think 1osie the hen also lived on 'elligan$s farm0 Does 'elligan make wheat to send to the mill to make flour for bread0 Does he make his own bread at the farm02 &sing the play rota, - will invite each group of children to tell me what play activity they will engage in today. will then invite the children to plan their play with one another, first orally and then by drawing or writing on clipboards. After a few minutes - will ask a number of children to tell the class about their play plan. "he children will then proceed to the play activity. $evelopment% - will move around the class ensuring that3 (ach child is located at her appropriate play station. 4he is equipped with the materials necessary for activity. "he child understands the task required. - will engage the children in conversation about what they are playing with it, what they are making and what they would like to achieve today. %y focus for this week will be on the group engaged in puppet theatre. - will model the activity to the group by firstly designing and then beginning to create my puppet while saying my thoughts aloud. - will then demonstrate with pre,made puppets, a small dramatisation of my favourite part of !"he #ig in the #ond$. - will observe the individuals at work and scaffold their learning by asking what would the characters say to each other, how would they react, etc. - will also engage with the children in conversation throughout, getting them to explain, reason, speculate, 5ustify, elaborate and evaluate.

Distribute puppet templates, colours and crafts to group Ask them to design their puppet 4caffold as appropriate (nsure there are sufficient templates for the children to allow each child to have at least 6 characters 1ecord observations on teacher$s checklist beside the student$s name.

"hese photographs can be used as an aid memoire for the children as they describe to the class the play activity in which they engaged. - will then invite a number of children to describe and evaluate their play activity. Finally, - will move the cards on the play rota onto their position for the next day$s play session. 9y doing this, the children know in advance the play activity that they will be focusing on tomorrow.
