In Chapter 13 we can see that Kitty found his husband, Walter Fane, a very reserved, restrained, cold and

somehow dull man with no charm. Both of them had nothin in common! thus, she wondered why he had ever fallen in love with her. "owever, it was obvious that he loved her madly and would do anythin to please her. In Chapter 1# she was introduced to Charles $ownsend, and she had li%ed him very much. In fact, he had the charm that Walter didn&t. 'oreover, he could ma%e anyone feel at home with his amusin and caressin voice. (urin Chapter 1) the basis of Kitty&s love*affair with 'r. $ownsend are e+plained. Charles had told her that he was cra,y about her, and that she was the most beautiful thin he had ever seen. Furthermore, she had never been in love before! and now that she %new what it was li%e, she felt sympathy for the love that Walter bore her. -n the other hand, when Charles became her lover, the situation between her and Walter seemed absurd to her. $hrou h Chapter 1. is noticeable that this affair made Kitty happier than ever. It was so that instead of loo%in tired and drawn, she loo%ed ei hteen once more. What&s more, she wished she were Charles& wife rather than Walter&s. Chapter 1/ is about the fact that Walter would %now or not the truth. 0t first, Kitty had resi ned to the idea of seein Charlie only by stealth, but now that their love was so stron and impatience that couldn&t bare to be away from each other for so lon . 1evertheless, both of them %new that not only they, but also Walter and (orothy would suffer very much. Finally, both chapter 12 and 13 are about the unnervin feelin Kitty was oin thou h. 0fter reali,in that the idea of divorcin Walter scared her, her heart started to beat wildly. Walter came home earlier than usual, which made her fear even more. Both made observations about trivial thin s tryin to have a conversation, but there was somethin between them that %ept them from tal%in as usual. 4ater on, Kitty as%s Charlie to meet her ur ently, to which he replies that he can mana e to see her for ten minutes.
