Case 2: College Mentors for Kids STEM Activity Grade Level: 8th Josh Hart, Ed Roland, Tianyi Yu TA:

Rudy Rico

OVERVIEW

Students will be learning how to identify and measure acute, obtuse, and right angles and work with complementary, supplementary, and alternate interior angles. 8th grade students considered at-risk and enrolled in the College Mentors for Kids program. Students are given the definition of supplementary angles and will be able to recognize and explain them reasonably without making mistakes. Students are given the definition of complementary angles and will be able to recognize and explain them reasonably without making mistakes. Students are given the definition of acute, right and obtuse angles and will be able to recognize and explain them reasonably without making mistakes. Students are given the definition of alternate interior angles and will be able to recognize and explain them reasonably without making mistakes. For this lesson, the following materials will be needed: chalk or white boards protractors and rulers/meter sticks practice worksheet (provided) pencil/pen Smart Board (optional)

LEARNERS OBJECTIVES

MATERIALS

PROCEDURE

Before beginning this lesson, students should have prior knowledge of: basic knowledge of angles limited experience using protractors First, students will review how to find angle measurements using a protractor. Random angles will be drawn on the board. Individual students will be called up to measure the angles showing proper use of a protractor. If a smart board is available, display the angles and protractor tool to measure the angles. Then, the lesson will focus on complementary angles. This section will also introduce students to acute and right angles. Students will be provided with the information needed to recognize and measure complementary angles. Students will be taught the terms acute angle and right angle and what they mean. Angles will be drawn on the board and a response for the class will be prompted for each drawing. Students will state whether the angles are complementary or not and if they are what the angle values are. If a smart board is available, display this part of the less just as the last. Supplementary angles will be covered next in the lesson. Students will also learn about obtuse angles. Same procedure as with complementary angles will be used here. If a smart board is available, display this part of the less just as the last. These two portions will now be combined

so students can practice recognizing and measuring acute, obtuse, right, complementary, and supplementary angles. Next, the lesson will move onto alternate interior angles. This portion of the lesson will combine supplementary and complementary angles. Students will be provided with the information to recognize a situation in which alternate interior angles can be sued to find angle measurements. Examples will be darn on the board for a visual representation. Random examples will be drawn on the board for students to be called upon to practice individually. If a smart board is available, display this part of the less just as the last. Finally, students will be given a worksheet to complete. The front side will be individual work focusing on complementary and supplementary angles. The back side will be group/partner work and will focus on alternate interior angles.

ASSESSMENT

Students work during the lesson will be evaluated by the following three-point rubric: Three points: Students had deep understanding of the angles and their characteristics and complete the worksheet with over 90% correct Two points: Students generally knew what these angles meant and got over 70% of the worksheet correct. One Point: Students were not able to recognize the angles quite well and got less than 70% of the

worksheet correct.

STANDARDS

This lesson is detailed in the the Indiana state eighth grade standards: 8.4.1 Identify and describe basic properties of geometric shapes: altitudes, diagonals, angle and perpendicular bisectors, central angles, radii, diameters, and chords. Identify complementary, supplementary, vertical, adjacent, and congruent angles (Eighth grade - Q.1) Find measures of complementary, supplementary, vertical, and adjacent angles (Eighth grade Q.2) Lesson plans that were drawn from include: http://tinyurl.com/moyb8yp http://tinyurl.com/n7qrpoo http://tinyurl.com/llken2n
