and enslaved blacks the country was also separated into North, South and West! i. Whites were in control! ii. Slaves suffered some of the harshest treatment found in the Caribbean & considered to be property of the pubic and with little choice, yielded obedience! iii. Maroons are escaped slaves who lived in the jungles and mountains - they occasionally raided plantations and even the towns, killing whites and taking slaves away with them. The Maroons became like the bogeyman to blacks and whites alike. ! - Haiti, whose population is almost entirely descended from African slaves, won independence from France in 1804, making it the second country in the Americas, after the United States, to free itself from colonial rule. ! - Runaway slaves are called Maroons! - The Haitian revolution would go on to serve as a model for those affected by slavery throughout the world! - Before the revolution, the salve population was nearly 90%! - The root of this revolution was the fundamental imbalance in the Haitian Revolution! - There were laws that dened what a slave owner could and couldnt do to their slaves but were all routinely ignored! - There are at least two documented cases of runaway slaves being captured, tied over a log, a funnel put up their backside, gunpowder poured in and then a fuse lit - all for the benet of the other slaves - they were killed by being blown apart as a warning to the others. need to be categorised! spread !
