FOREWORD
Alhamdullilah, with the grace of Allah SWT, Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB) has been able to publish its very first book, Students Guide Book. With the publication of this Students Guide Book, it is hoped that students in particular and the public in general will use it as reference .
It is the preliminary information about the Academic Departments, the programs offered and the units that help to further strengthen learning in PTSB. PTSBs desire is to produce first class huma n capital, competent, skillful, creative, innovative, progressive and critical thinkers to meet the needs of the nations workforce.
Indeed, publishing the first edition of this guide book is a starting point to the development of delivery and pedagogy in PTSB. Dissemination of information is not only limited to this guide, but students can reach it through PTSB website :www.ptsb.edu.my/portal and www.cidos.edu.my.
Last but not least, my sincere words of appreciation to those who have been involved in making the publication of this Students Guide Book a reality and Insyaallah, all these noble efforts will get blessings from Allah swt.

Introduction
Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB), is strategically located on a 100 acre land in Kulim Hi-Tech rd Park (KTPC). It started operations on the 3 of March 2003 and was formerly known as Politeknik Kulim. The polytechnic, the second in Kedah Darul Aman, was officiated by His Majesty the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan AlMutasimu Billahi Muhibbudin Tuanku AlHaj Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan th Badlishah on the 27 of March 2007. PTSB is an advanced learning institution that effectively serves the educational, cultural and social needs of the community and country. Over the years, PTSB has tirelessly endeavored in guiding the younger generation towards academic excellence whilst expanding its teaching and learning facilities and capabilities. Its four academic departments, namely Mechanical Engineering Department, Civil Engineering Department, Electrical Engineering Department and Commerce Department, working in collaboration with General Studies Department and Mathematics, Science and Computer Department, to ensure that PTSB graduates gain an edge over others when they enter the labour market. PTSB also aims to be a flexible learner-centered educational institution, providing a conducive learning environment in supporting short courses for the community at large and fulfilling its corporate social responsibility objectives. With strong commitment from its frontline and support staff, PTSB strives to be the best polytechnic in the country. With the ISO 9001:2008 accreditation ensuring quality and consistency of the teaching and learning process, and continuous effort to raise the qualification and professionalism of its teaching staff, PTSB is well positioned to face future challenges in meeting the needs of industries in the Kulim Hi-tech Park, Kedah and Malaysia in general. PTSBs most important clients are its students. Throughout their years in PTSB, the students are groomed and trained to have necessary technical and life-long learning skills. Opportunities to pursue practical education and hands-on learning are provided through the implementation of industrial attachments with the aid of qualified experts and professionals. These efforts signify PTSBs commitment to produce quality manpower and world class credentials to fulfill the need for semi-skilled workers in the public and private sectors in Malaysia.

Outcome-based education (OBE) is an educational model for students to demonstrate their knowledge and able to perform according to the required outcomes. It is a student-centred approach that focuses on students learning. It starts with a clear picture of what students should know, what they should be able to do, and what desirable attitudes and values needed to organize the curriculum, instruction, and assessment to ensure an ultimate learning (Spady, 1994:1). Thus, OBE involves the restructuring of curriculum and assessment that reflects achievement of high learning order and mastery learning. OBE helps students to be aware of what they should learn, aware of what they are learning and the control over their own learning. It leads to successful student learning and encourages lecturers to be well prepared. It also provides students with appropriate,purposeful learning experiences and opportunities for students to develop originality, self-motivation and independence while acquiring useful knowledge and skills.

INTRODUCTION
Civil Engineering is one of the academic departments in Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah. It started its operation in 2003 and previously known as Politeknik Kulim where it offered two programmes at diploma and certificate level. They are Civil Engineering course and Land Surveying course. Civil engineering is moving forward by offering efficient and professional services in its education based on the two programmes in order to produce potential graduates who are hardworking, charismatic and professional. To realize this, CED has professional, dedicated and experience lecturers and it also has complete infrastructures such as classrooms, lecture hall and computer lab which is fully equipped and comfortable for the students to achieve a successful academic. This department is currently led by Mr. Mohamad Kamarudin bin Darus as the Head of Department. He is assisted by 2 Heads of Programme, 57 academic staff and 1 non academic staff. Currently, the number of students is 1118 with an average intake of 180 to 250 students for every semester. Objectives: Always upgrading the quality of learning and teaching in the related field. Producing students who are semi professional in civil engineering and land surveying studies at certificate and diploma levels to fulfill the human resource needs in public and private sectors.

Starting from July 2010 semester, the intake for certificate students has ceased to exist due to the new transformation of polytechnic to become one of the well known higher learning institutions in Ministry Of Higher Education. Thus, the current programs are restructured and the following is the new program structure:

3.1 PROGRAMME OVERVIEW This programme is designed to equip students with sound knowledge and skills, and understanding of the environment, construction industries, construction designs and infrastructural development of civil engineering .The knowledge and skills acquired will be useful for success in future or current employment. Students are also equipped with knowledge regarding occupational safety and health. OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH 1 is designed to impart understanding of the basic of safety and health in workplace setting. This course presents aspects of occupational safety and health, which are essential for employees to analyzing safe and healthy environment, resulting in less hazards at the workplace. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of regulations, OSH management, accident prevention and occupational First-Aid methods. CREDIT (S) : 1 PRE REQUISITE(S) : NONE
1. Describe the OSH regulations and compliance and how it will create safe working environment. 2. Identify hazards, risks and safe work practices in order to maintain healthy and safe work environment. 3. Perform related actions to respond to accidents at the workplace.
ENGINEERING DRAWING provides knowledge of drafting principles in plane geometry, orthographic projection, auxiliary views and sectioning. This course emphasizes practical skills and knowledge in manual drawing. CREDIT(S) : 1 PREREQUISITE(S) : NONE
1. Explain the drawing instruments, equipment and materials successfully. 2. Apply the correct principles of plane geometry and isometric drawing. 3. Create an auxiliary view from any orthographic projections and apply basic. 4. Methods of isometric drawing accurately. 5. Describe the sections and cutting-plane lines and draw a sectional view given a two-view drawing correctly. 6. Produce and interpret construction drawing correctly in standard format.
CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND APPLICATIONS provides the students an overview of concepts and basic principles regarding wood, bricks, steel and non-steel works, finishing and types of structures. This course also emphasizes the above materials used in construction of structures. CREDIT(S) : 3 PREREQUISITE(S) : NONE
1. Describe briefly the properties of civil engineering materials. 2. Participate actively in class discussion on issues related to civil engineering. 3. Materials, the professional and ethical responsibilities of civil engineers in civil engineering projects. 4. Demonstrate positive team work attributes by contributing actively in group projects. 5. Successfully identify the importance of interaction between human and environment in civil engineering. 6. Independently seek and present current information on Green Technology.
ENGINEERING SURVEYING 1 provides knowledge on basic principles of analyzing, compass survey theodolite traverse survey. This course emphasizes the basic distance measurement, bearing and angle in order to get the shape of terrain and the position on the field. It also gives knowledge and practical skills to students in operating and handling survey instruments and working procedures to perform engineering survey works, booking, calculation and plotting. CREDIT(S) : 3 PREREQUISITE(S) : NONE
1. Describe briefly types of surveying. 2. Explain correctly the basics and methods of measuring distance, bearing and angle. 3. Calculate correctly the differences in heights, coordinates for surveying stations and area of a traverse. 4. Work collaboratively in groups to complete the engineering survey work including booking and plotting.
ENGINEERING SURVEYING 2 gives knowledge and understanding about control survey, detail survey, data collection or acquisition, calculation and plotting of survey works. The module puts emphasis on the method used to carry out surveying works especially data collection or acquisition to produce plan based on the scope of work. It also gives exposure to the need for accurate data to be used for other surveying works. CREDIT(S) : 3 PREREQUISITE(S) : NONE CONTRACT PRODECURE equips students with knowledge of the construction industry in general, tender procedure and contract procedure. The modules emphasis on contract condition is to provide exposure to the students regarding all the procedures that have become standard practice in the construction field based on Standard Form of Contract P.W.D. Form 203 (Rev.2007) and P.W.D. 203A (Rev.2007). CREDIT : 2 PREREQUISITE(S) : NONE
1. Explain briefly the basic distance measurement, difference in height and figure of the terrain. 2. Calculate accurately the coordinates of survey stations, areas and volumes of traverse using appropriate methods. 3. Determine precisely the horizontal and vertical control point for curve ranging and setting out. 4. Demonstrate positive team working attributes by contributing actively in engineering survey work, booking, calculation and plotting.
1. Describe briefly the responsibility of team members and builder members in current construction industries. 2. Integrate correctly the principles of tender and contract procedure according to Standard Public Work Department Standard Forms of Contract. 3. Explain efficiently the role of Construction Industries Development Board (CIDB) influencing the construction industries in Malaysia. 4. Explain effectively terms in equivalent contract compliance with Employment Ordinance 1955. 5. Communicate and interact effectively, practice good work ethics, and contribute effectives payment to contractor and interim certificate, final certificate, determination of contractors employment and arbitration according to Standard Conditions of Contract.
CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY course provides the students with the knowledge and understanding of concrete material and concrete mix design in the construction industries. The course includes conducting laboratory work for concrete testing, preparation, transportation, casting, compaction and treatment of concrete. The construction methods of reinforced, precast and pre-stressed concrete are also included. CREDIT (S) : 3 PREREQUISITE(S) : NONE
1. Describe briefly the concrete material and mixtures. 2. ELECTIVE COURSE AW201 OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH 2 SYNOPSIS Is designed to impart understanding of the self-regulatory concepts and explain the requirements and provisions under the OSHA. This course presents the responsibilities of workers in implementing and complying with safe and healthy approaches at work. Understanding of notifications of accidents, dangerous occurrence, poisoning and diseases and liability for offences will be imparted upon students. This course will also provide an understanding of the key issues in workplace ergonomics and guide the students gradually into this multi-disciplinary science. Equips students with knowledge on the position of celestial bodies such as the moon, sun, stars and planets with reference to earth. This study is important to land surveyors in field works such as determining the azimuth in land boundaries, checking angles in long traverse and determining geodetic positions or geographic points on earth. Provides students with knowledge of the programming concepts using the Visual Basic programming language. The course emphasizes on design the programmed which includes examining code, looping statement and also creates and document naming standard. Function
The Liaison & Industrial Training Unit (UPLI) is responsible for managing students industrial training affairs. Students will be assigned to a particular organization during their training period based on their respective fields of study. The placement process is finalised before training commences. Students are constantly advised to maintain a high level of discipline. They should abide by the rules and regulations of both the polytechnic and organization. Organizations are advised to consult the polytechnic immediately if there are any disciplinary problems. INDUSTRIAL TRAINING COURSE (AT401) Industrial Training exposes students to related workplace competencies demanded by industries. It also equips students with real work experience, thus helping students to perform as novice workers. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: a. Apply related knowledge and skills at the workplace. b. Communicate effectively with others. c. Practice teamwork. d. Professionally and ethically comply with policies, procedures and rules of the organization. e. Explain the tasks assigned (during the industrial training) according to the prescribed format. ASSESSMENT The course assessment is carried out by Coursework where its a continuous assessment that measures knowledge, technical skills and soft skills. 6.7LIBRARY UNIT Function The library provides quality and up to date information to everyone in terms of managing and providing access to information resources. Taking the role as a centre of knowledge, the library acts as a catalyst and assist in the teaching and learning and research in the process of producing creative and innovative semi professional. Function
Training & Continuous Education Unit (ULPL) is mainly responsible in handling various internal and external training courses for all staffs of PTSB. Among the important courses are CPCM and PPK courses which are included as compulsory criteria for staff promotion. Alongside with CPCM and PPK, this unit also has to ensure that all PTSB staffs attended at least ten days of courses yearly as required by the ministry of higher education. Besides handling staffs training, ULPL also deals with organization of diploma courses for part-time students (KSS) offered in PTSB throughout the year. Another main contribution of this unit in students learning is in arranging the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for all PTSB students. The standardized MUET test is offered thrice a year in collaboration with Malaysian Examination Council (MPM).

6.9 INFORMATION SYSTEM UNIT Information System Unit plays a vital role in administrating and updating system, data and computer network surrounding Polytechnic Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB). In this highly and fast evolving and changing era of technology, it is a must for the unit to keep up and be at par with the needs of the users so as to ensure the teaching and learning process is always easy, fast and accurate with the aid of the latest ICT facilities. Led by an Information Technology Officer, the Unit is empowered with 2 other IT Officers, 2 IT Assistant Officers and 7 experienced Computer Technician to serve its function and carry out tasks in making the dream a reality. Functions / Roles: To administer and perform computer and peripherals maintenance works as well as system and application development, maintenance and support services To plan and execute acquisition of replacement parts, assets and facilities related to ICT in PTSB To develop, administer and update official web portal of PTSB To administer the servers and network around the campus To administer acceptance and implementation of new systems To plan, administer and execute ICT training for staffs in PTSB

Function
CISEC of PTSB was established in 2010. This one-stop centre, lead by Puan Azhani Ariffin with the assistance of CISECs committee representing each department, plays an important role in providing fast response to request or queries from the industries, pre-selection of candidates, single point of contact for employment, assistance in arranging recruitment presentation and also opportunities to build a closer relationship with the industries. CISEC has successfully organized activities that helped to promote and increase students employability. This was proven in the 1L5G Report (1 Lecturer 5 Graduates) where the number of employed graduates reached up to 80%. Function The Research and Innovation Unit (UPIN) was established in 2009 in line with the transformation of the polytechnic education system under the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. The focus of the Research and Innovation Unit is on improving writing scientific research skills and knowledge among lecturers and staff. Scholarly researchers are implemented through the Action Research, Innovation Research and Communication Applications Data. The UPIN is situated at the first level of PTSB library building. Strategies and Programmes a) Develop writing and research skills and knowledge among the lecturers and staff. b) Facilitate training programmes such as Research Methods, the usage of relevant computer applications such as Statistical Programme for the Social Science (SPSS), and package for various aspects of writing research. c) Organise courses, workshops and consultation sessions regarding proposal writing. d) Organise colloquium, seminars and/or research presentations. e) Produce proceedings of seminars at Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah. f) Encourage lecturers to be involved in presentations, workshops and seminars at zone level. g) Collect and disseminate of information on projects and innovations to highlight staffs and students achievements. h) Collaboration and establish networks with other higher education institutions in seeking for advice, panel of assessors for evaluation on research papers and studies.

The Quality Assurance Unit (UJK) of Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah was formed in 2005 known as Quality Unit. The Quality Assurance Unit divided into two (2) units. The Quality Management Unit and Accreditation Management Unit. The Quality Management Unit is responsible for quality management in Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah. The efforts of continuous improvement are the objectives of Polytechnic in implementing MS ISO 9001:2008 Quality System.
