This situation has arisen because the Boer population travelled north in search of a new land. When landing there they were spurred on by dissatisfaction with British rule in the cape. This caused two largely independent republics, the Orange Free State and the Transvaal/South African Republic (SAR). The uneasiness of their relationship and the tension that had erupted between the two republics caused a War to break out in 1880 where the Boers made a costly defeat over the British. The discovery of gold and diamonds in the Boer republics further intensified the rivalry particularly as the British flooded into the Boer territories in search of wealth. The British rights that were in place in Boer territory, the British imperial ambition and the way the Boers wanted to stay outside the British Empire caused the Boers to attack in 1899.

So what? What impact have they had on the modern world?

South Africa expanded from the Cape to Zambezi. Britains reputation suffered badly from the implementation of concentration camps (one of the first Wars to have this) and its inability to defeat 60, 000 farmers. Britain made many mistakes in their military that were soon fixed. Britain forced the Transvaal and the Orange Free State into their Empire Britain had fought for many things in the War that were given away by the South African Union in 1907 racism was now allowed and Boers became the largest group of votes hence former Boer commando leaders became the leaders of South Africa. There are many Australian sources available on the Boer War and other varieties and perspectives. I think that there is a relatively fair amount of information on this topic. There are many perspectives on the siding of the War and the effects it has had.

Shaping the modern world

Why? Why has this situation arisen?

The origin of the War was in slavery especially the extension of slavery in the western territories. It arose as a result of the discrimination and the slavery occurring in America. As well as the issues of slavery, the war also rose because of the dispute over the individual rights of each state. After 4 years, 600 000 soldiers were left dead and much of the Southern infrastructure was destroyed, the Confederacy collapsed and slavery was abolished, the reconstruction process of restoring national unity and rights to slaves began. There is quite a lot of comprehensive information of this topic and many sources and perspectives.
