ABSTRACT

Background : Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG) is a chronic optic neuropathy, which slowly progression, characteristics with excavatio of optic nerve, visual field disturbance, loss of retinal ganglion cells and axons and open iridocorneal angle. POAG is a common type of glaucoma (nearly 50% of cases of glaucoma). POAG prevalence increases with age. In POAG patients found trabecular degenerative processes, deposition of extracellular material in the trabecular and under endothelial layer of Schlemm's canal. Purpose : Knowing the relationship between age and primary open-angle glaucoma in Balai Kesehatan Mata Masyarakat (BKMM) West Nusa Tenggara Province 2012-2013. Methods : The data be obtained by medical record in BKMM NTB. Samples by total population in 25 POAG patients in BKMM NTB 2012-2013. Patients were divided into two groups, group I (patients aged over 40 years) and group II (patients aged under 40 years). Then compared to 25 patients with non-POAG. Statistical tests using Chi-square and Contingency Coefficient. Result : Results of chi-square and contingency coefficient was obtained p = 0.047 (p < 0.05), showed a significant difference between POAG cases in patients aged over 40 years (22 patients) and under 40 years (3 patients), so the H1 is accepted . Conclusion: Age over 40 years at high risk of POAG. Keywords: Age, Glaucoma.
