BANNERMAN HIGH SCHOOL

Values Launch

Our captains have been working hard on our school values and recently took assemblies for all of

their houses. Last session, young people, staff and parents identied three values which we believe represent what we, as a school community, are about. The values identied were respect, responsibility and ambition and the house captains used examples of how pupils in Bannerman have demonstrated these values throughout the session. A competition was organised for seniors studying art and design or graphics to design a poster to illustrate our values. Their prize was to work with a professional designer and have their work commercially produced and displayed in all classrooms and social areas around the school. Jack Buchans design can now be seen all around the school. Values are lived and demonstrated and the school community will have the opportunity to nominate people they believe have consistently demonstrated these values in or outside of schoo!"##We look forward to recognising our rst values ambassadors later this session. China Week

We had another successful China week to celebrate 2014! Pupils celebrated Chinese New Year across the curriculum. During our China week, pupils learned to greet each other, introduce themselves and count to 100 in Mandarin. We discovered many fascinating traditions about Chinese New Year and interesting facts about China including famous cities in China, population size, Chinese currency and current exchange rate between pounds and RMB. Pupils also enjoyed horse paper cutting, Chinese lantern making and Chinese themed paper jewellery making. In Administration, using software, pupils designed and made their own Chinese bookmarks. In English, pupils produced their own creative writing piece based on Chinese palm of the hand stories. The Fashion and Textiles class described the garments they were designing, inspired by China whilst the Food group described their Chinese cooking. The pupils from Technical described how they made a solitaire game and the PE boys played jianzi. With help from our drama and modern language departments, our S3 pupils staged a spectacular Chinese New Year themed school show on the last day of our China week for and audience of S1 pupils. Drama students performed Chinese legends, Chinese drumming was performed by the music department and the event nished with a wonderful display of ribbon dancing. Stunning Chinese themed art work was displayed in the foyer throughout China week. Ms Chang

To raise the awareness of Chinese culture and celebrations of Chinese New Year 2014, pupil from our senior Mandarin classes visited a local Chinese supermarket and restaurant with Ms Chang and Ms Ma. We discovered that everyone loves Chinese noodles Mian Tiao, Spicy Green Bean Gan Bian Si Ji Dou and Sweet Sour Pork Gu Lao Rou , surprisingly, many of us enjoyed the chicken feet too! We not only learnt some new words (e.g. chopsticks, green tea, etc.) but also important Chinese table manners. Pupils loved the China week experience! Ms Chang

Litter Picks
Our S1 pupils have continued to develop their citizenship skills and do their bit for the local community by taking part in further litter picks in the area surrounding the school. Since January a further six litter picks have been carried out involving almost 200 S1 pupils. The litter pick programme is supported by Sandy Johnston, Neighbourhood Improvement and Enforcement Ofcer for Community Safety Glasgow. Prior to taking part in the litter pick pupils nd out more about the problem of litter across Glasgow in their PSE class. They look in particular at how long it takes items such as a juice can or piece of chewing gum to degrade. The support from the community has been really positive with locals pointing out the streets where litter is the biggest problem so that the pupils can focus their energy in these areas. Mrs Belford

John Muir Award

Bannerman High Schools rst John Muir Trust Award Group has just nished the Discovery (Bronze) Award. Every Friday, period six and seven, Ms McKechnie and Mrs Hay have taken a group of S3 boys out to a local park to discover the great outdoors and learn a little about the Scottish Naturalist John Muir. As part of the Award, the boys took part in orienteering, denbuilding, environment/land management, team-building and gained an appreciation for learning outside of the classroom environment. We didnt even let the terrible weather stop us! We are pleased to say that all boys have received their Discovery Award: Callum Wu Ryan McNeill Michael Campbell Jack McLeish Cameron Packer The Awards were presented to them by Mrs Smalls and we are all proud of their achievement.

Glasgow SchoolsDance

On Wednesday 19th February four of Bannermans Dance Teams were involved in the seminals of the Glasgow Schools Dance Competition. Out of a total of ve places available Bannerman took three! The competition was held at St Andrews High School and there were a total of 18 performances showcasing a wide range of styles from across the city. The level of talent was phenomenal and the Bannerman pupils were exceptional. The young people showed great condence and performance skills and were an excellent representatives of Bannerman High. All of the pupils involved worked extremely hard towards the competition and were very committed giving up lunchtimes and attending after school rehearsals. The boys and girls were ecstatic and have begun preparations for the prestigious nals held at The Royal Concert Hall on Friday 5th June. Congratulations and well done! Miss Ahmad

Teachers Fortunes

To raise money for the charity Whizz Kidz, the 3rd year XL group held a Teacher Fortunes event. This was a spin-off of the popular ITV show called Family Fortunes and involved two teams of teachers. One team was from the English Department and the other was made up of teachers from the rest of the school. The xl pupils put a lot of work into arranging the event and raised 170 for the charity. On the day of the event Zach Hiney and Conor Rhodes were responsible for lighting and sound. Cameron Packer and Jordan McWhirter hosted and co-hosted the event. Kiera Ryan, Rebecca MacRae and Kennice McKay were ushers and ticket collectors. Callum Ogden was in charge of the Powerpoint and music. The show ran smoothly and was a great success. Zach Hiney S3

David Livingstone Art Competition

Back in January the David Livingstone Trust with The Open University launched an art competition for all schools in Scotland. Pupils had to create a poster to celebrate David Livingstones 200th anniversary. In Support for Learning, three pupils took up the challenge. John Duncan (S5), Kelsey Bonner (S2) and Bryan Grice (S1) worked hard through their intervals and lunchtimes to design and create their entries while learning a little about David Livingstone himself. They submitted their entries and waited patiently for the results. Out of 150,000 entries, John, Kelsey and Bryan won for the Secondary Schools category and on Friday 7th March attended the prize-giving ceremony in Edinburghs City Chambers where MSP Hamza Yousaf awarded Bryan 3rd place, Kelsey 2nd, with John receiving 1st place. It was an incredible achievement for them all. Their winning pictures will now be on display as part of a Malawi/Livingstone exhibition. Johns winning news also made the Evening Times! We also wrote to the Derwent Pencil Company to tell them about the pupils achievement, as they used Derwent art materials to create their winning entries and Derwent very kindly sent them their very own pencils sets to continue with their artistic endeavours. We couldnt be more proud of John, Kelsey and Bryan they all did exceptionally well. They enjoyed the buffet with all the dignitaries too! Mrs Hay/Mrs Hynes

Girls Football

Bannerman sent two S1-S4 teams and a senior team to Toryglen Regional Football Centre to participate in the Soccer G Christmas Cup Four A-side Competition. There were 7 teams in the Senior competition and 27 teams in the S1-4 competition. In the morning all the teams played in group games hoping to qualify for the knockout league in the afternoon. The Senior squad of Emma Baird, Kirsten Treanor (both S6), Toni McVey, Chloe Thompson, Lauren Kelly (all S5) did very well to reach the semi-nals of the competition and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity in playing in the competition. The Bannerman B squad of Chloe Stephenson, Ellie Willison, Lauryn Clements (both S3) Carli Thomas, Sophie Matheson, Amber Man, Caroline Baillie (all S2) played very well to reach the premier league competition. The Bannerman A squad of Hannah Fulton (S4), Zoe Lamont (S3) Ellie Street, Zoe McGurn, Becky ODonnell (all S3) Amy Copeland, Claire MacFarlane (both S1) played exceptionally well to reach the Champions League Final against Castlemilk High School. It ended up a draw at 2-2 so this meant it was down to penalties. The girls held their nerve to win on penalties and receive the Christmas Cup! This is a fantastic achievement which the girls have worked very hard for. Miss Reid

Go4set

Go4set is an environmentally themed 10 week STEM project for S2. The aim of the project is to inspire students towards STEM related careers by linking education and industry in real life situations using hands on learning and skills development. The project culminates with a Celebration and Assessment day where the following elements are marked by a panel of industry drawn assesors:

A written report A 5 minute presentation An exhibition stand

The Bannerman team of Kirsty McIntyre, Toni Lawrence, Katie Elliot, Ellis Currie, Amber Man and Emma Hastings have been working on ways to improve recycling within the school. They have researched the school waste management policy and sourced evidence of attitudes towards recycling among staff and pupils. It is clear from research undertaken that there is room for improvement within the school. Steps being considered includes a new recycling bin called Binner-man to improve the collection of the food packaging that tends to accumulate in social areas at lunchtimes.

Mr Melone

Gold Medal Programme

Ashleigh Carter and Chloe McLaughlin (S4) represented Bannerman High School at a showcase event held in the Emirates Arena today. At this event both girls demonstrated how we have put funding gained through GHA and Cube housing to good use buying netball dresses, balls and transport to league games. This project forms part of our Commonwealth legacy programme and the girls were talking to Glasgow City Council representative about the possibility of tickets to the games ngers crossed! Mrs Cook

S2 Health Event
Good health!is not only about not being ill, it is about being happy and feeling whole from a physical, emotional and spiritual point of view. S2 pupils experienced exactly this during their Health Day in March. For the day pupils worked in their tutor groups attending workshops on varying health matters including:

- First Aid! - Relaxation - SOS bus - Drug and alcohol awareness - Sexual Wellbeing - Judo - Healthy eating

All pupils experienced different contexts of health and wellbeing on the day, reporting they learned new things and considered the choices they can make throughout life to make sure they are healthy, happy and achieving their best. S5 and S6 pupils helped in the delivery of the day and were a true asset. It is hoped that next year they can take on the full organisation of this annual event. Well Done! Mrs Cook

Burns Breakfast

The 25th of January is our annual celebration of Robert Burns life and poetry. Every year around this time, rst and sixth years from Burns house join together in a Burns Breakfast. This years Burns Breakfast had the most participants we have ever had, including a dance to The Proclaimers, 500 Miles by S1 girls and a musical performance of Burns Auld Lang Syne by Alren Reyes in S6 and Niamh Deveny in S1. The breakfast opened with a bagpipe solo by Calum Clark, S4. This was followed by Mr Swann, who performed the address to the haggis. This is always the highlight of the Breakfast and he did not disappoint us. However his graphic description of the contents of a haggis, did not have us rushing to try the samples on offer! As a substitute for whiskey, we used Irn Bru in our toast to the haggis. A group of S1 boys recited Burns most famous poem Tae A Mouse and afterwards, a more modern take on a Burns style of poem called Tae a Daft Wee Lassie written and performed by Melissa Rennie from S6. A quiz was then held which questioned whether certain Burns facts were true or if they were false. Many Sixth years cheated at this quiz and thought we didnt notice. However, we did and we hope they still feel a cloud of shame till this very day! The Burns Breakfast was an overall success that was enjoyed by everyone and we would like to thank all of our participants and hosts of the breakfast, Joshua How and Emma Riccomini. Melissa Rennie S6

Arran Field Trip

A group of S5 pupils travelled to Loch Ranza on the Isle of Arran for a weekend of geography eld trip activities. The weekend complemented both the Higher and Intermediate 2 courses that pupils had been studying. We arrived at a very scenic Loch Ranza to be met by Kate, one of the instructors and Chris the centre manager. We were shown to our rooms, given a tour of the centre and were issued with all the kit we would need for the weekend such as walking boots and the essential waterproofs! In the afternoon, we started our eldwork with a Landscape Evolution activity which involved walking from the centre up Glen Eason with Kate. We viewed the Glacial features we had studied in Higher and Standard grade and noted key terminology that Kate told us and pointed out. In the evening we reviewed the key glacial features of the landscapes on worksheets in the classroom that was to be ours for the weekend. After an hour and half of the class we were free to use the pupil common room and met up with pupils from St Pauls High School who were also there. Saturday was our River Studies eldwork activity with Emma another instructor. In the morning we were introduced to the investigation format and prepared how we were going to carry out the study in our classroom. We then set out to the four sites chosen along the River Eason despite the fact it was raining- at least we had our waterproofs!

Unfortunately the rain got heavier and river levels started to rise too much so we were only able to complete two sites and the eldwork had to be abandoned. On a positive note, we did not lose as many oats and metre sticks down the river as St. Pauls had done! Once we were dried off and back in the warm classroom, we processed the data we had collected and Emma gave us additional data for the sites we couldnt complete. The River Studies activity was completed with our analysis of the data and conclusion written. On Sunday we spent the morning canoeing on Loch Ranza bay with Emma and another instructor Jez who had been warned that we were quite an enthusiastic and talkative group. We learnt how to canoe in groups of threes and played a game of collecting oating ducks called Chuck a Duck. Jez commented that we had been the best group out canoeing that year. In the afternoon we completed a Microclimate, Soils & Ecosystems eldwork activity. Again we prepared our aim and research question in the classroom and Emma took us through the methods we would use on four chosen sites in the surrounding area. At each site we looked at the soil characteristics such as depth and texture, vegetation cover and the topography and climate. This was to be very useful for the Higher Biosphere unit that we were to complete later on this year. We then went back to the classroom to process and analyse our data then come to a conclusion. On the Monday we made our way back to school by bus, ferry and train. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at Loch Ranza where we learnt a lot about carrying out investigations for Geography and topics relating to our coursework. Miss Reid

LRC News

In December, the Autism Unit held a very successful charity event as part of their Christmas coffee morning. Pupils made Christmas cards, bookmarks and baked cakes to sell at the coffee morning. The pupils also organised a rafe and were successful in securing a number of donations from local businesses. Parents, former staff and former pupils also attended the event. All present enjoyed the occasion, with everyone delighted at the 113 which was raised for the charity. The pupils were very proud that all their hard work had been a success, and in February four of the pupils got the chance to visit the Prince and Princess of Wales current hospice to deliver the cheque.

Success for Sam

In June 2013, after 5 successful years, Sam left Bannerman High School. We were pleased to learn that Sam was furthering his already considerable achievements by gaining an apprenticeship with Glasgow Housing Association. Sam secured his job after applying through the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative scheme. Well done, Sam!

Off to college
Ross, who is currently in S5 and working hard for his upcoming exams, had some great news recently. He has secured a place at the City of Glasgow College at the Riverside Campus. Ross is looking forward to starting there in August.

Glasgow Schools Cycling

S4 pupils were successful in gaining a place on a cycling course at the amazing Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. They attended the velodrome for a four week course developing their track cycling course and were all successful in achieving their level 2 accreditation to the track! Pupils involved included Mark Lamont, Sean Hughes, Connor Elliot, Jonathan Martin, Jamie Leigh Black, Abby Sherlock, Reini Muldoon, Amber Beresford, Claire Wallace, Hannah Shiels and Ashleigh Carter. They all learned to ride the banks (steep parts of the velodrome), how to overtake, interchanging in a team pursuit and riding in a sprint. Sean Hughes and Ashleigh Carter had the fastest lap times in the nal week, riding at insane speeds around the perfectly at and aerodynamic course. They have both been asked back to compete against other Glasgow Schools. Well Done to all involved - Mrs Cook was so impressed (scared and nervous too!) with their condence and positive attitude!

S4 Sports Leaders

We organised a day for the primary 7s to come to Bannerman for a sporting event. There were 206 pupils from all our primaries which were Mount Vernon, Swinton, Carmyle, Garrowhill, Caledonia and Sandaig. They did many activities such as football, dodgeball, basketball, tness suite, parachute and the megaball. Beforehand we used our time in core PE to prepare for the days events. We split up into our three teams of 5 or 6 and got all the equipment required for the day ready. Once the primary schools came up to the school, in our teams we went out onto the pitch and set up our warm, up and several different drills. It was a stressful day and we all had to work together as a whole team to make the day as successful as it could be. Most of the primary seven children co-operated well. Most primary seven pupils were well mannered and were a great representation of their school. As a whole most enjoyed their day and had lots of fun, some even made new friends! All S4 Sports Leaders passed their Level 1 qualication on the day! Eilidh Warnock and Gary Watson (4W2)

BBC Sportsound

BBC Sportsound hosted the popular Sportsound on the road live from the Bannerman School football pitch on Monday, March 24th. As part of the show over 40 school pupils from Bannerman were treated to a football masterclass. Kris Boyd, Pat Bonner, Steven Mcmanus and Derek Ferguson were on hand to put the young pupils through their paces. Pundits Tom English and Chick Young joined host presenter Kenny Macintyre in hosting the event which was broadcast live on radio Scotland. Some of the football coaching was tremendous to see and the pupils beneted from having international standard players train them. At the end some of the pupils were interviewed live on air as they described the fantastic coaching they had received. After the show many autographs and seles were taken and pupils headed home with memories of a day they will never forget. Mr Pattison

Strathclyde Business School

Over the last four weeks we have been working with four undergraduate students from Strathclyde Business School. We took part in a project which involved designing an app that would help students and young people like us to decide on career pathways and subject choices. This involved researching a number of potential careers and matching the most appropriate subject choices to these jobs to ensure pupils were well qualied for the career of their choice. Each group looked at two different jobs that the app could be used to give information about - we decided to look at a vet and a reman. We had to work in small teams and take responsibility for doing different aspects of the task. We started off by looking at the different techniques and skills that companies use to sell their products and how we could use these to market our newly created app. We then looked at presentation skills and after viewing a number of video clips we identied what makes a good and bad presentation. We then started to look at budgeting and prots and the need to manage nance when launching a new product. At the end of the project we travelled to the Strathclyde Business School to present our work to an audience. The project was really interesting and gave us the opportunity to develop team work skills, business skills, research skills and presentation skills. Scott Robertson S2

Charities Update
So far this session we have raised 4106.70

The Charities Committee, which is made up of eight young people in S6, have continued their hard work over the last few months raising even more money for our chosen charities this year. In December they organised a Wear your Christmas Jumper to school day to support the Yorkhill Childrens Charity. On the day pupils turned out in an array of Christmas Jumpers and a fantastic 1174.70 was raised for the charity. In February they held a non-uniform day where pupils were asked to dress down and wear pink and green, the colours of Alzheimer Scotland. Despite the fact that the upper school were on exam leave, and so did not take part in this non-uniform day they still managed to raise and impressive 705.85 for the charity.

Drama Department London Trip

In February the drama teachers and 40 pupils had a fun packed weekend in London. On Friday we travelled down by bus and stayed at The Ramada Hotel near Wembley. On the Friday evening, after settling into our rooms, we went to see a fantastic performance of The Jersey Boys an energetic and lively show that had us all on our feet dancing by the end of the evening. On the Saturday we had a tour of the Globe Theatre on the South bank, and then attended a matinee performance of Wicked in the afternoon. After dinner we experienced the fear factor by going to see a performance of The Woman in Black. On the Sunday we had some retail therapy at Covent Gardens before heading home exhausted but happy. Thanks to Mrs Campbell for organising the trip, a great weekend!

BBC Work experience by Cameron Strachan S6

I have just returned from a weeks work experience at the BBC Studios in Glasgow. During this week I was given the opportunity to do some work in the various departments in the building. Some of these were to be present during the live broadcast of Radio Scotland and the live broadcast of Reporting Scotland. This involved sitting in the studio where all the work took place, as well as being involved in a brainstorm for a new Childrens programme the BBC are set to produce and make. I was given access to all departments and was allowed to see the day to day working of those at the BBC. Also I was allowed to see a small clip of future episodes of shows the BBC make and will release in the coming months. Furthermore I was allowed into the sport department where I was able to see how they put together the football show Sportscene and how they worked on the weekends to receive the scores and keep the viewers up to date. It was a really exciting experience.

Team Malawi 2014

On Saturday the 22nd of March, some of the Malawi team did a sponsored abseil. The money raised from this abseil not only went towards the Malawi fund but also went to help the children in Malawi by going towards childrens school fees and an orphanage. The abseil took place at The Glasgow Climbing Centre in Govan. The climbing centre was a church that had been converted into one of the best indoor climbing centres in Scotland. The team was not abseiling indoors, instead they were to abseil off the spire of the church. The team consisted of 2 teachers: Mr Wilson and Mr Scott, 8 pupils that are going on the Malawi Trip and Mr Wilsons brother and a visitor from Malawi. The 12 people were to get safety gear on and head to the top of the spire. Once at the top of the spire two instructors set up the ropes and made sure they were secure. After this the rst two people were to go down. One by one everyone went down. Soon everyone had done the abseil, nearly everyone had started making their way back up to go again. Some even got a third go at going down. In the end everyone had enjoyed it and would happily do it again, it proved to be an enjoyable, fun experience and in the end it was all for a good cause!
