Unit Project Unifying Theme The unifying theme for our interdisciplinary unit project is building a skateboard park proposal. We have four difference subjects that contribute to our unit project; social studies, language arts, math and art. Each of these subjects connect to our unit project in an intimate way. Social studies is the main focus of the project. The students learn about the democratic system and how this system affects different communities. The purpose of the project is to teach students how to navigate the democratic system to make changes to a communitys quality of life that are in keeping with a communitys values. Children learn the intricate role of the cumulative efforts of a variety of individuals and how one individuals voice can make a difference within a community and democratic system. The subject of language arts is incorporated into our unit to facilitate students communicative efforts in their pursuit of a skatepark. Students learn the importance of communicating in a respectful manner with public and politicians and the other communities involved in making such an extensive project a success. There are many layers of communication such as persuasive writing in a letter, accessible and aesthetic writing for public advertising, and inquiry writing to gain a variety of information and answer questions the students may have. Math is an integral part of building a skatepark. Students must be aware of the different functions math plays within the skatepark such as the use of angles and be able to use this knowledge to inform their decisions about how they want their skatepark to look, and what features they would require to accomplish what the community wants.

Community based art is the intimate representation of both the individual and the community values. Students will be working on a peer led initiative that facilitates these two themes. They will also be encouraged to consider other positives ramifications of art (for example, statistics show that when mural art in already in place, it decreases vandalism). They will also be required to create their own individual interpretation of the art and how it may represent their own involvement in the community. In conclusion, each of these subject areas are necessary to facilitate and focus the theme of the unit. Each subject has activities that guide the students towards an essential understanding of their role in democracy and in their community. !
