W.6.1 = Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. a. Introduce claim(s) and organize the reasons and evidence clearly. b. Use words, phrases, and clauses to clarify the relationships among claim(s) and reasons. d. Establish and maintain a formal style. e. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from the argument presented.

Performance Level 4 = Advanced


Exceeds Grade-Level Standard

Text Type
4 papers meet all 3 requirements in addition to elements beyond grade level. Elements may include: Supports the position with compelling examples, facts, reasons, or details that go beyond the obvious. Addresses counterarguments with specific and compelling evidence. Provides an eloquent conclusion that firmly supports the position. Responds to all parts of the prompt. Clearly introduces and states a claim or claims. Clearly connects evidence to the central argument and supporting ideas. Maintains a formal style (i.e., third person, first person formal letter). Provides a concluding statement or section that follows from the argument presented. Uses and cites credible sources to demonstrate an understanding of the topic. (Provides basic bibliographic information for sources.) Responds to some parts of the prompt. Attempts to state position may be wordy, vague, or ambiguous. Supports the position with some evidence not all evidence may relate to claim. Includes a weak conclusion. Does not adequately respond to the prompt. Fails to establish a position. Provides minimum evidence, if any, to support the position. Simply ends the writing with little summation or conclusion.

Traits
4 papers meet all 3 requirements in addition to elements beyond grade level. Elements may include: Chooses and places vocabulary thoughtfully for impact in conveying information. Uses a wide variety of sentence structures (compound, appositive, compound-complex) to enhance the readability of the writing. Uses voice to demonstrate a strong commitment to the position.

3 = Proficient
Meets Grade-Level Standard

Produces clear and coherent writing that demonstrates Produces multiple paragraphs to organize the writing. Uses transitions to link one paragraph to another in a clear line of thought. Employs the appropriate vocabulary to support claims and reasons. Uses a variety of sentence structures (expands, combines, and reduces sentences for meaning, reader/listener interest, and style). Uses active voice rather than passive voice to foster understanding of the position.

Addresses all grade level California CCSS Language Standards1-3 (see back). Writes legibly with correct spacing and margins.

2 = Basic
Approaches Grade-Level Standard

Attempts to organize writing, but may move from idea to idea without a clear path may have difficulty with paragraphing. Uses some simple transitions to move from one paragraph to another. Uses ordinary language vocabulary is used or reused incorrectly. Writes mechanical and repetitive sentences using mostly simple sentences. Writes in passive voice. Writes in a disjointed manner with little attempt at organization. Uses few, if any transitions the writing may be one long paragraph. Uses limited vocabulary. Writes choppy, rambling, incomplete and/or run-on sentences.

Addresses some grade level California CCSS Language Standards. Writes legibly with inconsistent margin and/or letter spacing.
