Plot Elements Discussion

5 Minutes
Exposition (expose) The exposition exposes basic information about the narrative. This information includes the time and place of the setting (but sometimes only one of the two is revealed in the exposition). Other information exposed is the main character or characters. Finally, the situation or daily routine is exposed. Essential Questions: Use evidence from the text to discuss the following questions Where/ when does this story take place? Who are the characters? Who seems like the most important character? What is the situation or daily routine in this story?

7 Minutes
Climax (turning point) The climax marks the turning point of the narrative. It is when the rising action of the story reaches its most exciting part. Important information is revealed to the reader and certain characters. Actions are set in motion that will soon lead to the resolution. Essential Questions: Use evidence from the text to discuss the following questions What is the most exciting or interesting part of the narrative? Does this event occur late enough to be considered the climax? What information is revealed? What actions are set in motion that will lead to the end?

Whole Class Discussion


Resolution (resolve, solution) The Resolution is how the main action/conflict is resolved at the end of the narrative. The resolution informs the reader about how information from the exposition has changed. This includes how the main characters have changed at the end of the narrative. The resolution also includes how the overall situation or daily routines changed or did not change at the end of the narrative. Essential Questions: What was the main conflict of the narrative? How was the main conflict of the narrative resolved? How, if at all, have the main characters changed? How, if at all, has the situation or daily routine changed?

If you notice somebody being quiet (including yourself) ask politely if they have something to contribute***

***NOTE: Includers will have an additional task of keeping track of group participation. Watch out for too much talking, too little talking, and being off task. Be ready to verbally report participation for your group members, both positive and negative.

Talking Stick
Your group will use a Talking Stick during group discussion. Whichever classmate in the group has the Talking Stick is the only one who can talk. The Talking Stick should be passed around to classmates with raised hands so that the discussion can continue.
