Individual tactics
The ball carrier has three options. First aim is to score, the-
refore to shoot. The second option is to pass to a player who
has even a better chance to shoot. The third option a ball car-
rier has is to dribble the ball into a better position to shoot
or pass. This demands reaction speed and the ability to read
the game. Even though the ball carrier has the responsibili-
ty to make the decision, the non-ball carriers also have the
responsibility to assist him/her by screening, creating space
and passing lanes etc. Inside the game, all the roles and du-
ties interact. They all demand the player’s ability to estimate
space, speed, direction and time. The duties of different game
situation roles are shown in the table, as well as the technical
skills a player should possess in a certain role. It must be un-
derstood however, that the roles switch very quickly during
a game and a player is in a respective role only for a short
period of time. With junior players these individual tactics
should not be emphasised as they are shown in the table. This
would probably end up with total confusion, so the roles and
the duties should be introduced gradually in the progression
with the development of the game sense.

Level 3.
Drills on the third level are all executed with more than
two players on each side. The main point is that players are
aware of all the other players and their positions as well as
their own role. This demands a high level of understanding
and ability to read the game. With junior players, or begin-
ners, it should not be expected that they are able to read the
game and react to every situation accordingly, so the objec-
tives should be explained staying on the level for the players.
Performing different team tactics are included in the drills
such as openings, transition and defensive tactics. Most im-
portant are the individual skills that players have to per-
form while playing according to a certain tactical system.
